Offense Erupts as Marlins On Brink of Advancement in NCAA Softball Bracket

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (37-10) defeated No. 18 The College of New Jersey 9-3 to move on to the final round of the double elimination tournament.

Lauren Bible came in relief to get the win, pitched 5.0 innings, and allowed five hits, one unearned run, and four strikeouts. 

Caitlin Myers went 3-for-4 with a double, scored one run, and three RBI, Emma Adams went 3-for-4, scored two runs, and tallied two RBI, and Julia Piotrowski went 2-for-4 at-bat, scored one run, and had two RBI. 

The Lions started strong scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line to score the runners on first and second. VWU countered with two runs in the top of the second Caitlin Myers started the rally with a single up the middle, Julia Piotrowski reached on an error by the second baseman, and Madison Hudson was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Brooke Anderson walked to score Myers, followed by a single by Sarah Prosser up the middle to score Piotrowski from third tying the game at 2-2.

Virginia Wesleyan scored two more runs in the third inning as Alison Pollack started the rally with a single to center field advancing to second by the center fielder, Emma Adams singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Pinch runner Emily Halloway stole second before Caitlin Myers singled up the middle that scored Pollack and Halloway to take a 4-2 lead. The Lions scored a run in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 4-3. 

Brooke Anderson started the fourth hot hitting a single up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. Pollack walked, and Emma Adams singled to right field to score Anderson from third. Caitlin Myers doubled to right center and scored pinch runner Jenna Laird followed by a single from Julia Piotrowski to score Emma Adams that extended the Marlins' lead to 7-3. 

In the sixth inning, the Marlins scored two more insurance runs as Prosser started with a single to center field and stole second. Pollack singled up the middle to put runners on the corners for Adams who singled to score Prosser to take a 8-3 lead. With runners on second and third with two outs Piotrowski singled to right field to score Adams and lead 9-3.
