Virginia Wesleyan Splits with CNU, Sees Season End in Super Regionals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University split two games at Christopher Newport University in NCAA Division III Softball Super Regional action on Saturday morning and afternoon. The Marlins won the first game of the day, 5-2, to force a winner-take-all second outing. The Captains posted a 6-4 victory for its second win of the series to earn a trip to the national championship series in Marshall, Texas.

GAME ONE
The Captains scored first in the top of the first inning scoring two unearned runs to lead 2-0. The Marlins scored one run in the second inning with a homer from Caitlin Myers deep to center field.

Virginia Wesleyan's offense awoke in the third inning. Sarah Prosser singled to the shortstop and stole second before Laci Campbell then singled to put runners on the corners to set up a double steal play scored Prosser and moved Campbell to third. Alison Pollack hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Campbell to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead. Emma Adams singled to left field, and pinch runner Emily Halloway stole second followed by a triple from Caitlin Myers that scored Halloway. Julia Piotrowski doubled to right center field that scored Myers to extend the Marlins lead to 5-2. 

The Marlins went on to win game one 5-2 with a strong performance by Emily Seale and the defense.

Caitlin Myers led the offense going 3-for-3 with a triple and home run, scored two runs, and registered two RBI, Sarah Prosser went 2-for-3 and scored one run, and Julia Piotrowski went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. 

Emily Seale recorded the win in game one, improved to 16-6 on the year, pitched 7.0 innings, allowed four hits, two unearned runs, and had three strikeouts. 

GAME TWO
CNU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Captains added to their total scoring one in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. 

The Marlins fought back chipping away at the host's lead over the next three innings. Brooke Anderson reached first on an error by third base, followed by a single from Sarah Prosser to put runners on first and second before Laci Campbell doubled to right center scoring Anderson to cut the lead to 3-1. 

Emma Adams led the fourth inning with a walk and pinch runner Jenna Laird stole second. Olivia Knight hit an RBI single to score Laird to cut the lead down to 3-2. 

In the fifth inning, Brooke Anderson led off with a bunt single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Laci Campbell singled down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. 

The Captains hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to retake the lead at 6-3. The Marlins countered with a home run by Julia Piotrowski to bring the score to 6-4. 

Laci Campbell led the offense going 3-for-4 with a double and tallied two RBI, Julia Piotrowski went 1-for-3 with a home run, and Brooke Anderson went 1-for-3, stole one base, and scored two runs.
