Messiah Tops Randolph-Macon in NCAA First Round

MADISON, N.J. --- The Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball team ended their 2013-14 campaign 23-6 overall after falling 91-62 to Messiah this evening in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.

The Yellow Jackets fell behind early down 22-5 at 13:03 before a 13-5 R-MC surge initiated by a Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, VA / Patrick Henry) layup would cut the Falcons' lead to 11. The Jackets continued to fight, attempting four more shots than MC in the first stanza. 34.3% of those shots connected but Messiah would outshoot R-MC by 20.5% and take the 52-32 tilt at intermission.

Anderson recorded seven points and five boards in the first period while Taylor Huber (Ashland, VA / Patrick Henry) posted a team-high 11 points. The Jackets scored 11 points off the bench.

Looking to build a comeback in the second period, the Yellow Jackets put together an 18-23 rally with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation; ultimately, unable to cut the Falcons' lead.

Three Jackets finished the day in double-digits. Huber tallied 16 points while Anderson and Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) notched 13 and 10 points respectively. Lauren Vugteveen posted a team-high eight rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets took their ninth trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament after picking up the program's eighth ODAC title, and seventh in the past 12 years under head Coach Carroll LaHaye. This season R-MC spent five consecutive weeks ranked as high as 20th in the country and passed the 100+ point mark six times.

Three Yellow Jackets were named to the 2013-14 All-ODAC teams in Anderson, Huber, and Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, VA / J.R. Tucker). They each picked up All-Tournament recognition while Anderson took home the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.

Earlier this season Parsons recorded her 1,000th career point and currently sits 11th All-Time with 1,258 as a junior.

The Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball recorded 17 more victories than their previous season, posting 23 wins and a perfect 14-0 in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
