Washington and Lee Dominates All-ODAC Women's Lacrosse Awards

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University earned a league-best 12 all-conference honors in addition to all five special individual accolades to headline the 2021 All-ODAC Women's Lacrosse Awards.

Generals' seniors Landon Shelley and Catherine Arrix garnered the top two laurels in receiving ODAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year recognition from the conference's head coaches. W&L mentor Brooke O'Brien took home ODAC Coach of the Year plaudits, while first-year attack Hanna Bishop was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year. Shelley added a second special honor in being named the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the ODAC's athletic communications personnel.

Despite the year hiatus in awards announcements, there are several athletes with All-ODAC pedigree that appear on this season's lists. Six of those landed on the 2021 All-ODAC First Team. Roanoke College midfielder Emerson Foster and Shenandoah University playmaker Alyson Bittinger return to the first team after 2019 appointments to the same group of 13 athletes. Both Shelley and Arrix along with University of Lynchburg attack Kelsi Trevisan were All-ODAC Second Team picks two seasons ago. Maroons midfielder Lilly Blair jumped to the 2021 first team after earning a spot on the 2019 All-ODAC Third Team.

Roanoke attack Ellie Armstrong and 2019 ODAC Rookie of the Year Katherine Faria from W&L both feature on this year's second team. Faria was a first team choice in 2019, while Armstrong was a second team selection.

Shelley, a senior from Charlotte, N.C, shined both on and off the field for Washington and Lee. In the classroom, Shelley maintains a 3.893 grade point average as an accounting major. A multiple honoree on the All-ODAC Academic Team, Shelley has also appeared on the Washington and Lee University President's List. She is a member of the Williams Investment Society, which is a student organization that managers a portion of Washington and Lee's endowment in equity securities. She is also a member of the Money Matters Club and 24 Club as well as the Generals' Leadership Academy and Delta Society. She served as an investment banking analyst intern at Goldman Sachs last summer.

On the field, Shelley leads the ODAC in assists (45) and is second in points (61) to go along with 16 goals scored. Her .842 shooting percentage is fifth in the league. She has registered at least two points in each of 13 games played this season, including a season-high seven points on three separate occasions. Shelley is currently tied for first all-time at W&L at 136 assists with Leslie Bogart '03. Her 194 career points are currently sixth on W&L's all-time chart.

Arrix, a senior from Darien, Conn., has lived up to her recognition as a Preseason All-American by US Lacrosse Magazine entering the 2021 campaign. Now a two-time All-ODAC honoree, Arrix spearheaded a Generals defensive unit that has surrendered just 62 goals and posted a 4.77 goals against average in 13 games thru the ODAC Tournament. W&L has limited opponents to five or fewer goals in eight games including a shutout of Bridgewater to close the regular season. Arrix waited until her senior campaign to notch the first goal of her career as she scored in a victory against Guilford in early April.

O'Brien enjoys her eighth overall and fifth straight ODAC top coaching honor as her nationally 2nd-ranked Generals prepare for second round play at home in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.  In the midst of 14th season in the lead chair in Lexington, O'Brien led the Generals to their 11th straight and 21st overall ODAC title with a 17-9 victory over Roanoke in the conference championship. W&L's 18-8 win over Lynchburg in the ODAC semifinals marked O'Brien's 200th career victory. Entering the NCAA postseason, O'Brien boasts a 201-56 (.782) overall record that includes an 110-4 (.965) mark in ODAC regular season play.

Bishop, a first-year from Bronxville, N.Y., became a force for the Generals offense almost since day one. After missing the opener against Ferrum, Bishop rattled off five points on four goals with an assist in a 16-12 victory with fellow national power Christopher Newport University. Bishop has scored at least one goal in each of 12 games played, posting four goals on five different occasions on the way to a team-best 37 goals and 43 points. Those totals rank 10th and 13th in the ODAC, respectively.
