Wilson, Barrett Among 10 National Qualifiers from Southeast Regional Wrestling Championships

YORK, Pa. --- Greensboro College's Josh Wilson earned Regional Outstanding Wrestler honors as one of two class champions from ODAC schools at the NCAA Southeast Men's Wrestling Regional hosted by York College (Pa.) on Friday and Saturday.

Wilson captured first place at 141 pounds with Averett University's Mason Barrett standing atop the podium at 125 pounds. The pair are two of 10 wrestlers from ODAC schools that qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships next month from their performances this weekend. Ferrum College is the host of this year's national event with Roanoke's Berglund Center serving as the venue on March 10-11, 2023.

In addition to Wilson's special individual honor, Washington and Lee University head coach Nathan Shearer and assistant coach Alex Radsky were recognized as the Regional Coach of the Year and Regional Staff Person of the Year, respectively.

To earn a spot at the national championships, a wrestler must finish first, second, or third at their respective weight class. There are no at-large selections to the field as top-three finishers from each Division III regional account for each weight class's bracket.

Below is how ODAC wrestlers faired at the Southeast Regionals.

  • 125 LBS: Class Champion - 1 National Qualifier
    Mason Barrett (AU) claimed the weight class championship with a 3-1 sudden victory over Jacob Blair (DVU) to qualified for the national championships; Riley Parker (W&L) just missed on making it two ODAC qualifiers at 125 in falling to Luke Hoerle (SIT) by major decision (12-4) in the third place match.
  • 133 LBS: 7th Place
    Ferrum's Rubyn Semedo was the top ODAC competitor at 133; he won the seventh place match by 9-3 decision over David Rubin from Washington and Lee.
  • 141 LBS: Class Champion and Regional Outstanding Wrestler - 1 National Qualifier
    Greensboro's Josh Wilson earned Regional Outstanding Wrestler honors after claiming the 141 class title; he went 4-0 with two victories by fall including the final at 2:25 over Kyle Slendorn (SIT); Levi Englman (FC)Mark Samuel (RC), and Evan Lindner (W&L) finished fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively.
  • 149 LBS: 2nd, 7th and 8th Place; 1 National Qualifer
    Hai Siu (AU) finished as the runner-up to Hunter Guiterrez (Stevens) after the two clashed in the title bout; SIU has his title bid stopped by fall (2:32) by Gutierrez; Two ODACers met for seventh place with Morgan Robinson (RC) defeating Colin Bridges (W&L) by major decision, 11-3.
  • 157 LBS: 3rd Place - 1 National Qualifier
    Washington and Lee's Ryan Luth is headed back to the NCAA Championships after finishing third at 157; he defeated York's Jared Bair by decision, 9-3, to secure his spot in the national field; Jesse Alvarado (AU) and Zane Cox (RC) earned sixth and seventh position to collect team points.
  • 165 LBS: 2nd Place - 1 National Qualifier
    Washington and Lee's Harrison Kelly finished as the class runner-up after falling to Matt Lackman (Alvernia) by fall in the championship final; Anthony Taylor (AU) and Jacob Cherry (RC) won their fifth and seventh place matches, respectively.
  • 174 LBS: 3rd Place - 1 National Qualifier
    Averett's Alex Turley earned a 5-0 decision over Kade Kravits (King's) in the third place match to secure a place in the national championship; Mark Troni (W&L) finished in seventh position.
  • 184 LBS: 2nd and 3rd Place - 2 National Qualifiers
    A pair of ODAC stars will be on their way to Roanoke from the 184 class. Cameron Blizzard (W&L) came up short in the title bout with Isaac Kassis (Alvernia), falling by 4-2 decision; Mahlic Sallah (RC) churned out an equally close encountered via a 5-3 decision in the third place match over Frank Medina (SIT).
  • 197 LBS: 2nd Place - 1 National Qualifier
    Ferrum's Braden Homsey squared off with Camden Farrow (York) for the title with the host's wrestler posting a win by decision at 9-4
  • 285 LBS: 2nd and 3rd Place - 2 National Qualifiers
    The ODAC will be represented by two wrestlers at 285 at national; Brandon Williams (GB) finished as the runner-up to Michael Dooley (SIT) in a tight 2-0 decision; Rayshawn Dixon (FC) made it two ODAC wrestlers on the big podium with a 5-3 win by sudden victory over Palmer Rodenhaber (Alvernia); Matt Majoy (W&L) won the seventh place match for further success for conference wrestlers at this class.
