Generals Fall in NCAA Second Round to Mary Washington

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 21st-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Saturday in a 5-1 loss to No. 15 Mary Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Generals finish their season at 16-7 overall with the loss, while the Eagles improve to 13-5 overall with the win.
 
Despite dropping all three doubles matches, the Generals battled and posted close scores, with senior Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy) and sophomore Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) narrowly dropping an 8-7 (7-2) decision at the top spot. Claire Coleman and Amanda Hagino bested sophomore Gabi Moss (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Chaparral) and junior Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton), 8-4, at No. 2, while sophomores Nell Covington (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) and Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) fell at No. 3 by an 8-5 score.
 
In singles, Garcia's match finished first, and she claimed a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 win over Abigail Moghtader at the top position. However, Koziol was then defeated by Lauren Quinn, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, at No. 3, before Coleman claimed the match win with a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Moss at No. 2.
 
This concludes the team portion of the 2021-22 W&L women's tennis season. Garcia was selected to the NCAA Division III Singles Championship, and she will compete in a first round match on May 27 at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
