No. 22 Generals Fall to No. 7 Emory in NCAA Women's Tennis 2nd Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team was eliminated from the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Saturday by a 5-1 score to seventh-ranked Emory.
 
The Eagles (12-6) swept doubles play with scores of 8-1, 8-5 and 8-2, respectively. Emory then moved ahead by a 4-0 score when Ana Cristina Perez defeated W&L (19-7) junior Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) at No. 3.
 
First-year Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) got the Generals on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5, but Emory's Ilayda Baykan closed out the win with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 4 over first-year Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools).
 
Across the unfinished matches, W&L was more than holding its own against the Eagles. At No. 1, first-year Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to win the second by a 6-4 score. When the match ended, Long and Stephanie Shulman were tied at two games apiece in the third set.
 
Junior Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) was back in the lineup on Saturday at No. 2, and she swept Emily Kantrovitz in the first set. Kantrovitz countered with a 6-4 win in the second, but Moss led, 3-1, in the third at the match's completion. Junior Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) rounded out the Generals in action. She and Iris Berman traded 6-2 set scores heading to the third set, with Carlton bouncing back in the second after dropping the first.
 
The Generals conclude team play this season with a 19-7 overall record. Long will continue her rookie season individually at the NCAA Division III Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. Her first round match will be on May 19.
