2013 Women's Tennis Players of the Week

  • Briell Smith, Roanoke, Freshman
    April 22, 2013
    Smith, a freshman from Locust Valley, N.Y., helped the Maroons advance to the ODAC Tournament semifinals with 2-0 record at #3 singles and a 1-1 mark at #1 doubles. In a 5-4 regular season-ending win over Bridgewater, Smith won 6-1, 6-1 in singles play before falling 8-4 in doubles action with teammate Laura Dodson. The duo rebounded for an 8-2 win over Randolph College at #1 doubles in the ODAC quarterfinals. Smith also won her #3 singles match against the WildCats, 6-3, 6-0, to help the Maroons to a 5-0 team win.
  • Katie Gordon, Bridgewater, Junior

    Gordon, a junior from Winchester, Va., helped the Eagles to a 3-0 record against ODAC teams last week as Bridgewater defeated Sweet Briar, Virginia Wesleyan and Emory & Henry. Gordon posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at #1 singles against SBC, and then won 6-2, 6-1 from the top flight versus VWC. Against E&H, she won at #1 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Gordon was also 3-0 at #1 doubles, joining teammate Marla O'Bryan in topping SBC, 8-2, VWC, 9-8, and E&H, 8-3. Gordon is 15-2 this spring in singles action, all from the top flight. She's 8-2 against league opponents. Gordon is 15-3 in doubles action, all from the #1 position.
  • Alyssa Wingate, Emory & Henry, Junior

    Wingate, a junior from Independence, Va., went 4-0 between play at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with teammate Taylor Evans in two matches played last week. She won 6-1, 6-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles in a 5-4 loss to Sweet Briar. In a 5-4 win over Guilford, Wingate won 6-4, 6-4 in singles play and 8-5 in doubles action. Wingate is 9-6 overall at #1 singles and 8-6 at #1 doubles when partnered with Evans.
  • Sonja Meighan, Washington and Lee, Sophomore

    Meighan, a sophomore from McLean, Va., went 4-0 during the Generals 3-0 week. In a 9-0 win over Randolph, Meighan posted a straight set win at #1 singles and teamed with Cameron Dorsey for an 8-2 triumph and #1 doubles. In a 7-2 victory against #7 Carnegie Mellon, Meighan topped Chelsie Motie 6-3, 6-0. Motie is the seventh-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region. Meighan and Patricia Kirkland posted an 8-2 win at #1 doubles, defeating the region's eighth-ranked tandem in Motie and Brynn Raschke. Meighan, the fifth-ranked singles player in the region, is 13-4 overall and 9-2 in dual matches this season. She and Kirkland, who top the ITA's Atlantic South Region doubles rankings, are 15-3 overall and 11-1 in dual matches.
  • Meghan Buell, Washington and Lee, Sophomore

    Buell, a sophomore from New Albany, Ohio, went 8-2 on the week, competing in five of six matches for Washington and Lee as the Generals went 4-2. Buell went 4-1 at #2 singles, posting wins versus Roanoke (6-0, 6-1), Shenandoah (6-0, 6-0), Tufts (6-2, 6-0) and Sewanee (6-2, 6-3). She and partner Cameron Dorsey went 4-1 at #2 doubles with wins against RC (8-0), SU (8-0), Tufts (8-4) and Sewanee (8-2). Buell's only losses came to second-ranked Amherst. For the spring campaign, Buell owns a 6-3 singles record (5-3 at #2) and a 7-4 doubles record (5-1 at #2).
  • Katie Gordon, Bridgewater, Junior

    Gordon, a junior from Winchester, Va., went undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles during five matches over Spring Break in Hilton Head. In singles, Gordon won all five matches in straight sets, losing a total of just seven games. Nine of her 10 sets were won by scores of 6-0 or 6-1. In doubles, Gordon played with two different partners at No. 1 and was 5-0 on the week. In the five matches, she and her partner lost a total of just 13 games. Gordon and the Eagles posted victories over Ohio Wesleyan (8-1), St. Mary's (5-4), Marietta (8-1), Salve Regina (9-0) and Olivet (8-1) in improving to 8-0 on the season.

    Evans, a freshman from Gate City, Va., continued her unbeaten singles mark (8-0 overall, 6-0 in the spring) with four more wins from the #2 position in a 2-2 week for the Wasps. Evans topped singles players from John Carroll (6-1, 6-0), Regis (6-1, 6-0), Assumption (6-1, 6-1) and Misericordia (2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-4)). She and teammate Alyssa Wingate went 2-2 at #1 doubles, posting wins against Regis (8-0) and Assumption (8-6).
  • Sonja Meighan, Washington and Lee, Sophomore

    Meighan, a sophomore from McLean, Va., went 5-1 last weekend at the ITA National Indoor Team Championships. Against #17 Trinity (Texas), Meighan won 6-2, 6-1 at #1 singles against Mackenzie Knoop, the fourth-ranked player in the West Region (by the ITA). Meighan and teammate Patricia Kirkland topped Knoop and Thavindra Ekanayake (#3 West) in #1 doubles, 9-7. Meighan posted a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win at #1 singles over Nataly Mendoza (#12 in Northeast) to lead the nationally seventh-ranked Generals to a 6-3 win over #16 Skidmore. Meighan and Kirkland beat Melissa Hirsch and Alex Smith, 8-3, at #2 doubles. Against #10 DePauw, Meighan dropped a tight three-setter (6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5)) to Maggie MacPhail (#8 in Central), but rebounded for an 8-4 win at #2 doubles with Kirkland over MacPhail and Caroline Emhardt (#6 in Central). Meighan is ranked #17 in the Atlantic South Region in singles play and #9 with Kirkland in doubles action.
  • Jennifer Antoszyk, Roanoke, So, #1 Singles

    Antoszyk, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., is the 22nd ranked player in the South/Southeast Region by the ITA. She went 1-1 in top doubles action, including a tough two-set loss in a high profile match with Mary Washington's Lindsay Raulston (6-4, 7-5 (5)), the 19th-rated player in the country. Antoszyk recovered for a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Angelina Spotelli from Randolph-Macon College, leading RC to a 9-0 win over the Yellow Jackets.
  • Amber Lake, Shenandoah, Fr., No. 5 Singles

    Lake, a freshman from Pennsville, N.J., secured the Hornets' 5-4 victory over NCAA Division II Shippensburg with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph to help Shenandoah top Hood, 7-2.
