R-MC's Lowers Named AVCA National Player of the Week

ASHLAND, Va. --- Randolph-Macon senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) has been named Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association's National Player of the Week.

Lowers tallied an impressive 63 kills over three matches in the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship. She registered 53 kills on Saturday, Nov. 7 with 26 in the semifinal match against Roanoke and 27 winners against Virginia Wesleyan in the championship match.

She averaged 6.30 kills per set for the week with a .348 hitting percentage.

This season, Lowers received ODAC Player of the Week honors three times and was named ODAC Player of the Year for the second straight season. She tops the conference in kills per set at 4.40. Lowers has 431 kills and 1,125 total attacks in 2015. Her total of 431 kills is the third-highest total in program history. Lowers is third on the team with 63 blocks.

In 2014, Lowers led the conference and the team with 492 kills, the top single-season mark for R-MC. She is second on the R-MC career list with 1,392 kills, 30 away from the program record.

This is the second time in program history that an R-MC Volleyball student-athlete has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week. Mallory Carter '13 received the honor in 2011.

The Yellow Jackets earned the ODAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the 2015 ODAC Volleyball Championship. Top-seeded R-MC defeated No. 8 Lynchburg, 3-0, in the quarterfinals on Wed, Nov. 4 before defeating No. 4 Roanoke, 3-0, and No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, on Saturday, Nov. 7 to claim R-MC's fourth conference title.

Randolph-Macon will make its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its first since 2012. The Yellow Jackets enjoyed a three-year stretch of consecutive conference titles and NCAA appearances from 2009-11 and received an at-large bid in 2012. R-MC made it to the Sweet Sixteen in 2010.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Galloway, N.J. to face Stevenson in the Stockton Regional at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
