Generals Go Low on Tuesday to Claim ODAC Men's Golf Title

2019 ODAC Men's Golf Champion | Washington and Lee University

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. --- Washington and Lee men's golf picked a good day to post its best team round of the 2018-19 season as the Generals shot a tournament-low 6-under 282 to burst ahead of 36-hole leader Guilford College and claim the program's 14th overall ODAC men's golf championship on Tuesday afternoon.

Three Generals went under-par on the third and final day of the tournament at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center in Browns Summit, N.C. The effort was more than enough to erase a 5-stroke deficit to the Quakers entering the final round and post a 7-stroke victory.

The title, which is W&L's first since 2016, also includes the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Selections for that field will be announced online on Monday, May 6.

Much like in the ODAC women's championship, extra golf was needed to decide an individual medalist. Guilford's James Mishoe, the top ranked golfer in Division III based on the latest Golfstat.com ratings, led after both the first and second rounds before again finding himself at the top following the third round at 2-under. This time, however, he had company as W&L's Brian Peccie recovered a 2-over 38 going out on the front-nine with a 3-under 33 on the back. That included an eagle on the par-4 395-yard 16th hole, helping him match Mishoe at 2-under 214 for the tournament.

Mishoe and Peccie went back out to the 18th hole for what proved to be the only extra hole needed. Mishoe's parred the 443-yard par-4 to lock up the men's individual medal.

Mishoe posted rounds of 2-under 70, 1-over 73, and 1-under 71 over 54 holes on the par-72 track set at 6,895 yards. Peccie surrounded a tournament-low 4-under 68 in round two with a 3-over 75 opening 18 and 1-under 71 on Monday. The Quakers Josh Hill matched Peccie's 68 with his own 4-under total in round two. Hill (74-68-73) finished third overall at 1-under 215.

Washington and Lee improved each round throughout the championship, opening at 301 before posting rounds of 287 and 282 for a 6-over 870 final total. Guilford was consistent throughout, carding rounds of 292, 291 and 294 on the way to a 13-over 877. Hampden-Sydney College finished third at 42-over 906 (306-300-300).
