Previewing the ODAC Women's Golf Championships

CROZET, Va. --- Golf tournament week continues with the ODAC Women's Golf Championship set to begin on Friday morning at Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va. The women's 54-hole championship is slated to be competed on Friday-Sunday, April 28-30. This is the second year the ODAC's two golf championships have competed at different locations and on different dates. Guilford College claimed its record 19th men's crown on Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

The men's contingent was greeted with chilly temperatures each morning, but the weather was largely excellent thereafter. The conference's women's event will not be so lucky with cooler temperatures and rain expected for much of the weekend. Still, the crack staff at Old Trail -- which played host to the 2022 ODAC Men's Golf Championship -- will have the course as ready as possible to conduct championship play. The first round is slated to begin on Friday at 9:00 a.m. ET.

Washington and Lee University hoisted its fourth straight ODAC trophy last season winning by 24 strokes over the University of Lynchburg at 12-over 909. The Generals set then ODAC records with rounds of 301 on day one and 300 in the final, marks they lapped by 10 strokes after a second round 290 in Montgomery, Ala., this season.

Lynchburg's Emily Brubaker claimed ODAC individual medalist honors at 4-over par 220 following three rounds on the par-72 track at The Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Va. Brubaker trailed W&L's Marcella Mercer by four strokes after a first round 76, but the Hornets' top player posted a pair of even-par 72's over the final 36 holes to win by four strokes over Megan Kanaby from W&L.

Women's golf has made a lot of strides over the first decade as an officially sponsored ODAC sport. Teams and individuals alike -- including 2017 Division III champion Christina Harris from Bridgewater College -- have put the ODAC on the map in the sport. That trend continues this year with three schools ranked inside the top-100 by Golfstat. Washington and Lee leads that charge as the 10th ranked team in the country. Lynchburg sits 33rd, while Bridgewater chimes in 66th.

When it comes to player rankings, the ODAC's individual representation in Golfstat's rankings is just as impressive as its schools' plaudits. Below is a list of the six players ranked inside Golfstat's top-150 rankings along with their scoring averages.

  • Laetitia Roegner, W&L -- 29th (76.3)
  • Megan Kanaby, W&L -- 30th (76.7)
  • Marcella Mercer, W&L -- 36th (76.8)
  • Emily Brubaker, LYN -- 47th (77.2)
  • An Shelmire, W&L -- 52nd (77.9)
  • Emily Erickson, LYN -- 134th (80.3)
