Lynchburg and Washington and Lee Tied, Brubaker Leads at Rain-Soaked ODAC Women's Golf

Lynchburg's Emily Brubaker leads by three strokes following the first day of competition at the ODAC Women's Golf Championship at Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va.

CROZET, Va. --- Nearly three inches of rain fell on a soaked Friday, but the course at Old Trail Golf Club drained exceptionally well to allow the conference's women's golf contingent to play 18 holes on day one of the ODAC Women's Golf Championships in Crozet, Va.

University of Lynchburg and Washington and Lee University sit tied atop the team standings at 25-over 309. The Hornets Emily Brubaker owns a three-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard at 1-over 72. Bridgewater College's Savannah Scott and W&L's Megan Kanaby are close behind at 4-over 75.

The plan on Friday -- which changed several times throughout the day as ODAC and Old Trail officials collaborating with league coaches on the best course of action several times -- ultimately was to play nine holes starting at 2:30 p.m. ET on the back nine. The players moved around the course well aided by strong play and some help from well-positioned carts to cut down on long walks between a few holes. That allowed players to compete a second nine-hole round and complete 18 holes for the day just before 8:00 p.m. ET. In this situation, collegiate and playing rules required that the two sets of nine be categorized as two rounds of competition.

Brubaker carded the best nine hole to open the event, carding a 1-under 35 on the latter nine holes of the course. She birdied both par-5's -- the 463-yard 10th and 495-yard 14th holes -- to make up for a bogey on the par-4 16th hole. She led Kanaby by three strokes as the players came back in to the clubhouse to determine the next course of action.

That option turned into a second nine-hole round, this time on the front side of Old Trail. Scott and W&L's Marcella Mercer posted the best rounds at 1-over 36 each. Scott birdied the 306-yard par-4 first hole as well as the 150-yard par-3 seventh hole. Mercer was ever-steady with eight pars against just one bogey on the seventh hole.

Play is set to resume at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday with a full 18 holes of competition in considerably better conditions with no rain and temperatures in the mid to upper 70's in Crozet. Weather for Sunday for the scheduled conclusion of the event will again bring rain back into the equation with the added possibility of thunderstorms throughout the day.
