Generals Lift Team Trophy, Haetzel Claims Individual Medal at ODAC Women's Golf

Generals Kanaby Named Golfer of the Year, All-ODAC Awards Announced

CROZET, Va. --- In a stroke of great luck from the powers that be in the golf world, the ODAC Women's Golf Championship concluded a full slate of 54 holes at Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va. Washington and Lee University won its fifth straight league trophy behind its second straight sub-300 team round to finish at 50-over 902, 21 strokes clear of runner-up University of Lynchburg.

Generals first-year Julia Haetzel posted the lone under-par round of the tournament to propel her to the top of the leaderboard and individual medalist honors by one stroke over Lynchburg's Emily Brubaker, last season's individual champion.

In addition to team and tournament awards, the All-ODAC Women's Golf Awards were announced following the tournament. W&L's Megan Kanaby collected her second ODAC Golfer of the Year honor, pairing this with the recognition she received as the league's top player in 2021. Kanaby was also tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Lynchburg mentor Mike Veverka secured ODAC Coach of the Year laurels, while Randolph-Macon College freshman Elli Flinchum was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year. Bridgewater College senior Shaina Beach received ODAC Sportswoman of the Year distinction for a second straight season.

Washington and Lee, ranked 10th in Division III by Golfstat, saw all five players in its lineup shoot 77 or better on the way to a 296 team total. Haetzel's tournament-best 2-under 69 was powered by two birdies on the front nine to go out in 1-under 34 and three more on the back to return to the clubhouse at 1-under 35. She led all players with eight birdies for the tournament and was second in par-3 (+3) and par-4 (+4) scoring on the way to a 7-over 220 (40-38-73-69) following four rounds and 54 holes on the par-71 track set to 5,500 yards.

Kanaby and Marcella Mercer carded 4-over rounds of 75 to finish at 13-over 226 and 17-over 230, respectively. An Shemire and Laetitia Roegner posted 6-over 77's to finish at 16-over 229 and 22-over 235, respectively.
