Washington and Lee Leads After First Day of ODAC Swimming

Four Meet Records, Three Overall Marks Fall

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Washington and Lee University won three events on the way to 275 points to sit atop the standings after the first day of competition at the 2014 ODAC Swimming Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.  Seven records fell overall, with W&L involved in three new standards and Emory & Henry College figuring in the remaining four.  The Wasps are second in the team rankings (148 points), while Randolph-Macon College (133 points) rounds out the top three.

Women's Results     Men's Results

The first event of the finals nearly added to the day's record tally as Emory & Henry nearly established a new standard in the 200-yard free relay, but the Wasps were disqualified for leaving the blocks early.  W&L, which also was originally disqualified by the judges, saw its time stand up after a rules consultation.  The Generals first win came via a time of 1:37.57.

W&L's Elisabeth Holmes didn't keep fans waiting long for that first new record as she posted a time of 5:08.49 in the 500-yard freestyle, snapping a meet record that had stood since 1999.

Emma Swabb provided the Generals with their third straight win in the 200-yard individual medley.  Her time of 2:09.28 not only established a new meet standard, but it also eclipsed the conference's overall mark in the event.  Even though E&H earned second place through Allison Fowler, W&L picked up several points in the standings by finishing third-thru-seventh.

Randolph-Macon secured the win in the meet's fourth event as Emily Plowman touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle.  Her time of 23.98 was just .04-seconds quicker than E&H's Payton Shirey, the reigning champ in the event.  Earlier in the day during the preliminary round, Shirey reset her own ODAC overall and meet record in the event, posting a time of 23.91.

The final race of the day proved to be Emory & Henry's first win as the Wasps stopped the watches first in the 400-yard medley relay.  Their time of 3:55.78 crushed the previous league overall and meet records by nearly four seconds.

For the second straight year, ODAC select teams competed in a men's invitational in conjunction with the women's championships.  After the first day, Hampden-Sydney College leads Greensboro College, 227-176, thru five events.
