W&L Lifts Two ODAC Swimming Trophies for the Second Straight Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Two trophies, 12 overall and/or championship records, and 14 NCAA "B" cut qualifying times greeted ODAC swimming fans over the past four days in the Greensboro Aquatic Center at the 2023 ODAC Swimming Championships. Washington and Lee University took up position in its very familiar perch atop the winners platform after claiming both team titles for the second straight year.

The Generals boast ODAC records of 32 women's trophies and eight men's prizes with its mantle also increasing by three individual honors. Brynn Martinson took home her second straight ODAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet award, while head coach Kami Gardner collected ODAC Women's Coach of the Year laurels. Generals' first-year Dalton Jobe earned ODAC Rookie of the Meet distinction.

University of Lynchburg, runner-up in the men's points standings and third in the women's table, garnered three special individual honors. Colton Schnars received ODAC Men's Swimmer of the Meet honors, while Lindsey Hair and Matt Fields were named the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Women's and Men's Swimming Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Randolph-Macon College freshman Caroline Russell was tabbed the ODAC Women's Rookie of the Meet, and junior men's swimmer Ben Pastva received the Bonnie Kestner Sportsmanship Award. Bridgewater College mentor Gwynn Harrison was honored as the ODAC Men's Coach of the Year.

When it comes to records, it is almost easier to tell who which events do NOT feature new benchmarks in the men's ranks. Ten events account for 19 new records with all but one event featuring new ODAC overall and championship standards. Two women's events account for four more new records as Martinson snapped or matched her own overall and championship records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

While Washington and Lee ran away with both team crowns and stood on the #1 awards block in a majority of events, the parity in schools represented by event-winners was greater than in any season over the past two decades. W&L swimmers took home a dozen individual event titles split evenly between its men's and women's ranks. They also claimed all 10 relays amongst the two competitions.

Randolph-Macon collected gold medals in four women's events, while Roanoke College -- runner-up in the women's ranks -- secured two women's victories to go with three men's triumphs. Lynchburg won three men's events behind Schnars with Claire Galloway adding a women's championship for the Hornets.

Bridgewater first-year Andrea Cibrario won the men's 200-yard individual medley, marking the first event victory in Eagles men's swimming history.

Results Notes

  • Prior to Dalton Jobe (W&L) establishing a new 500-free overall and meet record in Thursday's finals, Ethan Brewer (RC) reset the event's record in Thursday's prelims with a time of 4:34.99, eclipsing the previous mark of 4:35.31 set by RC's Ben Tate in 2022.
  • Andrea Cibrario (BC), winner of the 200-IM, is the 1st ODAC champion in Bridgewater men's swimming history.
  • Brynn Martinson (W&L) tied her own ODAC overall and meet records in the 50-free previously set at last year's championships.
  • In the men's 100-yard butterfly prelims, Matt Fritz (W&L) set the ODAC overall and championship records at 0:49.57, surpassing the previous mark of 0:49.72 by Brennan Haley (W&L) in 2015.
  • In the men's 1,650-yard freestyle, Ethan Brewer (W&L) and Luke Nagel (W&L) would have also broken the previous ODAC record with NCAA "B" cut times of 16:05.14 and 16:05.27, respectively.
