Virginia Wesleyan defeats Washington & Lee 2-1 to advance to the ODAC Championship

Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - The reigning ODAC Champions the No. 3 seeded Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team defeated the No. 2 seeded Generals of Washington & Lee University 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Lexington, Va. Shyenne Diaz and Alexis Miller scored the two Marlin goals to keep VWU ahead of WLU and earn the right to host the 2022 ODAC Championship match on Sunday afternoon at the Tassos Paphites Soccer Complex.

FIRST HALF
The teams fought back and forth up and down the field for 45 minutes with neither team finding the back of the goal. Washington & Lee had a few good looks as the Generals took seven shots in the opening half. The Marlins got off two shots in the first half while keeper Rachel Quigley made two saves in the opening frame.

SECOND HALF
The Marlins came out of the halftime break more aggressive needing to break onto the scoreboard. Virginia Wesleyan 20 minutes into the second half broke the stalemate in the 65th minute as Shyenne Diaz corralled a rebounded save off of Alexis Miller's corner kick to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Not quite 15 minutes later in the 79th minute, Miller scored her own goal off her corner kick that the General keeper attempted to save but lost control and slipped past into the goal putting the Marlins ahead 2-0. Washington and Lee scored less than a minute later in the 80th to hold off the shutout, but Virginia Wesleyan managed to keep the Generals from scoring the remaining 10 minutes to hold out for the win.

  • Shyenne Diaz and Alexis Miller scored the two Marlin goals with Miller assisting on Diaz's goal. 
  • Keeper Rachel Quigley (W: 14-2-2) played all 90 minutes between the pipes making four saves and giving up one goal. 
  • Washington & Lee's record of 14-0-5 coming into today was the longest undefeated start to a season in program history and second-longest overall unbeaten streak in program history.
UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan is back in action on Sunday afternoon as they return to the Tassos Paphites Soccer Complex to host the 2022 ODAC Women's Soccer Championship match. Game time is still to be determined with the opponent slated as the No. 4 seeded Hornets from the University of Lynchburg.
