ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: April 8, 2013

BASEBALL
Corey Armentrout, Bridgewater, So., Pitcher
Armentrout, a sophomore from Harrisonburg, Va., picked up a win and a save during the week to help the Eagles post a 5-1 record. Armentrout pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits in a 2-1 win over No. 18 Shenandoah. He struck out six and walked just two. He pitched 1.2 innings in relief to get the save in a 7-6 win over Hampden-Sydney. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one. For the season, Armentrout is 3-0 with one save and a 4.34 earned run average in 37.1 innings pitched.

BASEBALL
Jake Fletcher, Randolph-Macon, Sr., 2nd Base/Shortstop
Fletcher, a senior from Deltaville, Va., helped lead Randolph-Macon to a 4-1-1 week by hitting .484 (15-for-31) with two doubles, a homer, six runs batted in and six runs scored. He also stole six bases in as many attempts, and walked twice to post a .529 on-base percentage. He had five multi-hit games, including a pair of four hit efforts in a 10-10 tie against Lynchburg and an 11-7 win over Eastern Mennonite. In the 16-inning marathon against LC, he went 4-for-7 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. He stayed hot the rest of the weekend in a sweep of EMU by going 7-for-9 with a double, two RBI, three runs scored and six steals. Defensively, Fletcher was in on four double plays and fielded 27-of-28 chances cleanly.

GOLF
Noah Ratner, Guilford, Senior
Ratner, a senior from Asheville, N.C., placed third overall and led Guilford to a fifth-place showing at the Emory Spring Invitational, which featured several of the top-rated teams in NCAA Division III. Ratner opened with a one-over-par 73 before rattling of a four-under 68 in Tuesday’s second round, the second lowest round of the tournament at the Druid’s Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. He tied for third (141) with Methodist’s Mike Wesko, three shots back of medalist Anthony Maccaglia from Oglethorpe. The third-place performances marks Ratner’s fifth-straight top-seven finish.

GOLF
Andrea Walker, Bridgewater, Freshman
Walker, a freshman from Warsaw, Va., turned in her third top-five finish of the season as she placed fifth overall at the Gettysburg Invitational over the weekend. Walker opened with a 91 in the first round, but improved five strokes in round two with an 86 to finish at 177 for the two-day event at Hanover Country Club in Abbottstown, Pa. She parred 11 holes over both rounds, including six on the final day.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Spencer Parsons, Roanoke, Jr., Midfielder
Parsons, a junior from Columbus, Ohio, helped lead the Maroons to a 2-0 week. He opened with two goals and an assist in a 22-5 triumph against Shenandoah. He also picked up four groundballs in that contest. Parsons followed with three goals in a 9-8 win at Lynchburg. His final tally broke an 8-8 tie with 1:28 to play third period, which proved to be the game-winner as neither team could crack either defense in the last stanza. For the season, Parsons has notched 12 points on seven goals and five assists.

MEN'S TENNIS
James Lee, Roanoke, Senior
Lee, a senior from Radnor, Pa., went 5-1 last week as Roanoke went 2-1 as a team. Lee, who is 12-1 this season from the No. 2 singles position, went 3-0 from the second slot this past week as he posted victories against Kyle Gatti from Greensboro College (6-2, 6-0), Drew Tomajczyk from Virginia Wesleyan (6-0, 6-1) and Dan Phung from Randolph College (6-1, 6-0). In doubles play, Lee and teammate Matthew Kessley went 2-1 with wins coming against Greensboro and Randolph in the top flight. The duo’s only loss, the first for Lee in his last eight doubles matches, came to Virginia Wesleyan.

OUTDOOR TRACK
David Cason, Guilford, Junior
Cason, a junior from Clemmons, N.C., set a new ODAC record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Duke Invitational over the weekend. Cason place sixth in the 29-man field with a time of 9:18.71, eclipsing the time of 9:19.21 set for Nathan Johnson from Washington and Lee in 2005. Cason’s time tops the ODAC seasonal ranks and is currently seventh in NCAA Division III.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Carmen Graves, Roanoke, Senior
Graves, a senior from Christiansburg, Va., competed in both the Duke Invitational and the Liberty College Invitational. The change in venue did not affect Graves’ performances as the multiple All-American set a pair of ODAC top times and broke two ODAC records. At Duke on Friday evening, Graves ran 4:32.80 in the 1,500-meter run to place fifth overall, eclipsing the previous ODAC record set by Washington and Lee’s Elizabeth Webb (4:37.90) in 2008. Graves’ time is fourth in the country. At Liberty on Saturday, Graves won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:59.02, taking over the ODAC’s top spot by more than 30 seconds and the ODAC record time of 11:22.19 established by W&L’s Becca Taylor in 2009. Saturday’s run was only the second time she’s ever competed in the steeplechase. Her time ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season.

SOFTBALL
Hope Johnson, Lynchburg, So., Pitcher
Johnson, a sophomore from Evington, Va., made five appearances for Lynchburg last week, winning three starts and picking up a pair of saves. She surrendered just three total runs and 17 hits in 20.1 innings of work. She opened the week by working five innings in a 6-1 win over Averett. She gave up one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. She came back in game two to fan the final batter of the game and pick up her first save of the season. She went the distance in game one against Randolph-Macon, scattering eight hits and a walk while giving up a run and striking out seven in a full seven innings. Johnson gave up just five hits in seven innings in game one against Virginia Wesleyan, giving up one run and whiffing three in a 6-1 LC win. She pitched a perfect final inning of game two for her second save of the week and season, which leads the ODAC. For the year, Johnson is 10-1 with a 1.63 EAR, fifth-best in the conference.

SOFTBALL
Cassie Phillips, Lynchburg, Jr., Pitcher
Phillips, a junior from Ashburn, Va., busted out of a season-long dry spell to help the Hornets to a 6-0 week that included ODAC sweeps of Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan in addition to a pair of wins over Averett. Phillips had four multi-hit games as she went 10-for-18 (.556) on the week with three homers, four runs scored and eight runs batted in. She went 4-for-7 in 6-1 and 7-6 wins over Averett. In 7-1 and 8-6 wins over R-MC, Phillips went 3-for-5 with a walk and a two-run homer to left field in game two. She provided all but one of LC’s runs in game one against Virginia Wesleyan as she went 2-for-3 with both hits leaving the yard, one a grand slam and the other a solo shot in the 6-1 LC triumph. She added another hit in a 3-2 in game two. Phillips has now hit in eight straight games, helping LC to 13 wins in their last 14 games.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Liz Bereit, Shenandoah, So., Midfielder
Bereit, a sophomore from Latrobe, Pa., helped lead Shenandoah to a pair of ODAC wins over the past week. She opened the stanza with two goals and an assist in an 11-7 win over Washington and Lee. She was 1-of-1 on free-position shots and corralled a draw. Bereit followed that with a hat-trick and two helpers in an 11-5 Hornets’ win over Sweet Briar over the weekend. She was 2-of-3 on free-position tries, while grabbing three draws and two ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers. Bereit is currently second for Shenandoah with 44 points on 28 goals and 16 assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Alyssa Wingate, Emory & Henry, Junior
Wingate, a junior from Independence, Va., went 4-0 between play at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with teammate Taylor Evans in two matches played last week. She won 6-1, 6-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles in a 5-4 loss to Sweet Briar. In a 5-4 win over Guilford, Wingate won 6-4, 6-4 in singles play and 8-5 in doubles action. Wingate is 9-6 overall at #1 singles and 8-6 at #1 doubles when partnered with Evans.
