Softball splits against Guilford in season openers

Greensboro, NC-The Salem College softball team started their season with a split at Guilford this afternoon. In game 1, Salem fell 5-3, before they cruised to a 9-3 win in the 2nd game. Jennifer Vitarelli led the Spirits with 6 hits for the day and Logan Bowling smacked 2 homers. Salem is now 1-1 overall, and Guilford is 3-1.

In the 1st game, Salem held a 3-0 lead after 4 innings, before Guilford scored 2 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to tie the game. The Quakers would score 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to secure the win. Lauryn Smith was on the mound for Salem and allowed 14 hits in the loss. 

The 2nd game was tight early, before Salem scored 4 runs in the 3rd inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead. They would tack on 3 more runs over the next 2 innings to secure the win. Brianna Morris earned the win in game 2 and she allowed 8 scattered hits over 7 innings.

Vitarelli was 6 for 8 over the two games and she scored 3 runs. Briana Crumley added 4 hits for the day. Bowling led the team with 3 runs batted in. Crumley, Vitarelli, Montana Lineberger, and Brittany Morton all hit doubles.
