ODAC Players of the Week - Week 28

FOREST, Va. --- Spring sports are officially a full go with outdoor track and golf opening their seasons. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Christina Herbert from Bridgewater women's golf, Sean Puleo from Washington and Lee men's golf, Abby Zorrilla from Shenandoah women's lacrosse, Evan Lombardo from Lynchburg men's lacrosse, Ryan Shepard from BC men's outdoor track, Rachel Murray, Kevin Moran, and Endasia Mitchell from LC outdoor track, Christina Harris from LC women's tennis, Grant Sarver from Randolph-Macon men's tennis, Sydney Reath from Eastern Mennonite softball, Colin Morse from SU baseball, Savannah Wood from R-MC softball, and Joseph Tuzzolo from R-MC baseball.

ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: March 12, 2018

BASEBALL - PITCHER
Colin Morse, Shenandoah, Sr., Pitcher
Morse, a senior from Vienna, Va., helped the Hornets pick up a conference victory at Lynchburg, 5-1, last week. He went 6.2 innings and surrendered just one run on three hits. He walked a pair and struck out eight batters. He retired the first six batters of the game and struck out at least one batter in each inning he pitched but the third. He is now 2-0 on the season with a 0.46 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 19.2 innings on the hill.

BASEBALL - PLAYER
Joseph Tuzzolo, Randolph-Macon, Sr., First Base
Tuzzolo, a senior from Newport News, Va., was a mainstay on the basepaths in the Yellow Jackets road sweep of Emory & Henry. Tuzzolo was 6-for-8 from the dish and posted a .750/.778/1.625 slash line in the series. He went 3-for-4 in both games. He scored three runs in game one and drove in two runs towards a 19-6 win. In game two, he scored four times and homered twice on the way to posting seven RBI in a 22-5 triumph. For the season, Tuzzolo is fifth in the ODAC in hitting (.429) and owns the conference's best slugging percentage at 1.029. He's also #1 in homers (6) and is second with 19 runs driven in and 36 total bases.

MEN'S GOLF
Sean Puleo, Washington and Lee, So.
Puleo, a sophomore from Albany, N.Y., put together the best round of the week for an ODAC player. At the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate, Puleo posted a 1-under 71 in the rain-shortened event. That tied for fifth among 102 players in a deep field. He helped Washington and Lee to sixth in the team standings at 8-over 296. Puleo's season average now sits at 73.8 thru nine rounds.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Christina Herbert, Bridgewater, Sr.
Herbert, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., opened the spring season with her sixth top-five finish in as many starts when combined with the fall slate of outings. Herbert finished in a tie for fourth at the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational at 4-over 148, just two shots off the pace. She was the top NCAA Division III athlete in the field of largely Division II competitors. Herbert opened with an even-par 72 before closing with a 4-over 76. Her efforts helped Bridgewater to a tie for sixth in the team standings at 673 (329-344).

MEN'S LACROSSE
Evan Lombardo, Lynchburg, Jr., Attack
Lombardo, a junior from Franklin Park, N.J., put together a 14-point week as Lynchburg picked up a pair of victories. Lombardo opened with five goals and a ground ball in a 21-7 victory over conference foe Bridgewater. He was at it again in a 21-7 triumph over non-conference opponent Elizabethtown College. He registered a career-high seven goals to go with two assists and two ground balls. For the season, Lombardo leads the ODAC with 22 goals scored and is second in points with 27.

MEN'S TENNIS
Grant Sarver, Randolph-Macon, So., #2 Singles, #2 Doubles
Sarver, a sophomore from Richmond, Va., helped the Yellow Jackets to a 9-0 team win over Penn State-Abington. Sarver won 6-0, 6-0, over Iker Erkut at #2 singles and joined Erick Moulton for an 8-1 win over Erkut and Andrew Mandujano at #2 doubles. He is now 2-1 on the season in both singles and doubles action.

OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Ryan Shepard, Bridgewater, Jr., Jumps
Shepard, a junior from Port Republic, Va., got his outdoor season started with a strong showing at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. He placed fourth overall in the high jump at 1.90 meters (6-2.75). That mark is rated #2 in NCAA Division III thru the first meets of the 2018 spring slate.

OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Kevin Moran, Lynchburg, So., Sprints/Hurdles
Moran, a sophomore from Milford, N.J., competed in three events at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC-Wilmington. Moran's highlight moment came in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second overall at 55.08 seconds. That time leads the ODAC and ranks second in NCAA Division III in the early meets of the season. It is also eighth-fastest in Lynchburg program history. Moran added an 11th place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.05 seconds and 20th place in the 400-meter dash at 52.14 seconds.

OUTDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Rachel Murray, Lynchburg, Jr., Throws
Murray, a junior from Chesapeake, Va., competed in three throwing events at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC-Wilmington. Murray established early ODAC top marks in both the discus and javelin while sitting second in the hammer throw. She won the javelin at Wilmington with a toss of 33.66 meters (110-5.00), which is 18th in NCAA Division III. It is also just off her personal-best and ranks fifth in school history. Murray added a fourth place finish in the hammer at 34.24 meters (112-4.00), just two inches behind teammate Elle Benefield for tops in the conference. Murray then placed seventh in the discus at 31.77 meters (104-3.00).

OUTDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Endasia Mitchell, Lynchburg, Jr., Sprints/Mid-Distance
Mitchell, a junior from Perry Hall, Md., posted a pair of ODAC top times after competing in two events at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington. Mitchell finished fourth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.94 seconds. That ranks #1 in NCAA Division III in the early season and fifth in Lynchburg program history. She added a seventh place showing in the 800-meter run in 2:26.72, which is 28th in the country.

SOFTBALL - PITCHER
Sydney Reath, Eastern Mennonite, Jr., Pitcher
Reath, a junior from Williamsburg, Va., went 3-0 in three starts last week, helping Eastern Mennonite to a 6-0 week overall. Reath registered a pair of complete games as she racked up 18.1 innings and gave up just two runs on nine hits. In a 2-0 victory over Wilkes, she worked 5.1 shutout frames allowing two hits and walking two with a pair of strikeouts. Reath then notched her first complete game of the week, going a full seven innings in a 3-1 win over Medaille. She gave up one run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Reath was perfect thru five innings in a 9-1 victory in six innings over Eureka. She worked all six, giving up one run on two hits in the final frame, the only baserunners and run she allowed. She struck out five batters. For the season, Reath is 4-3 in seven appearances including six starts. She owns a 1.67 earned run average with 21 strikeouts in 37.2 innings of work.

SOFTBALL - PLAYER
Savannah Wood, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Shortstop
Wood, a junior from Tappahannock, Va., was seemingly on the basepaths all weekend for nationally 13th-ranked Randolph-Macon as she racked up a .727/.800/.909 slash line in a 4-0 week. Wood went 9-for-11 at the dish with nine runs scored, a triple, five runs driven in, three walks, and three stolen bases without being caught. She was 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored, and two RBI with a walk in a 9-0 win over New Rochelle. She capped her perfect day with a 2-for-2 showing in an 11-0 win over Keuka. She scored two runs and drove in two more with a walk. Wood went 2-for-3 in an 11-2 victory over Manhattanville with a walk, a steal, two runs scored, and a RBI. She closed her week with a 1-for-3 effort in a 9-2 triumph over Oswego. She stole a base and scored two runs. For the season, Wood is hitting .371 (13-for-35) with 13 runs scored and eight RBI.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Abby Zorrilla, Shenandoah, Sr., Attack
Zorrilla, a senior from Lancaster, Pa., helped the Hornets to three victories last week including a triumph in its opening game of conference play. Zorrilla collected 13 points over the two games, including a crucial six points on one goal and five assists in an 11-7 victory at Roanoke to their ODAC openers. She found the back of the cage three times in an 18-7 non-conference win at DeSales University, and then scored once more and passed out three assists in a 17-14 triumph over the University of Scranton. For the season, Zorilla is ninth in the ODAC with 18 points on nine goals and an ODAC third-best nine assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Christina Harris, Lynchburg, So., #1 Singles. #1 Doubles
Harris, a sophomore from Falls Church, Va., picks up her second straight weekly honor after helping Lynchburg to a trio of team wins at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Harris competed at #1 singles in two matches and #1 doubles in all three outings, going a combined 5-0. She and teammate Caroline Guill won 8-1 in doubles play on the way to a 9-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. Harris took down Kalli Saffran, 6-0, 6-0, in singles play and joined Guill for an 8-2 decision in doubles action for a tight 5-4 triumph over St. John Fisher. Harris then defeated Emily Rutkowski, 6-1, 6-2, and partnered with Guill for an 8-2 result in doubles play on the way to an 8-1 team win over Eastern Nazarene.
