Women's Volleyball Competes in Nation's Capital

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Illinois Tech Women's Volleyball team competed in the Worthington Classic at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. this weekend. Tech fell to host Gallaudet 3-2 before losing in straight sets to FDU-Florham on Friday. Saturday saw the Scarlet Hawks fall to both Virginia Wesleyan and Rochester Institute of Technology.

How it Happened

  • Gallaudet was tough on Tech in the first two sets of the match, winning 25-14 and 25-13. 
  • However, the Scarlet Hawks showed a ton of resolve, coming back to win a close set three 25-23 before dominating in set four. Tech led 11-3 and then 16-5 in the set before closing it out 25-18. 
  • In the decisive fifth set, the Scarlet Hawks led by as many as five at 9-4. However, Gallaudet would turn the tables, forcing multiple ties down the stretch before winning 16-14.
  • Tech would struggle against a tough FDU-Florham team, falling 25-17, 25-10, and 25-14.
  • Against a tough Virginia Wesleyan team on Saturday morning, Tech started out set one with a 6-4 lead before VWU took control en route to a 25-17 win. 
  • WVU won set two 25-16 before Tech put up a fight in set three, rallying back from a large defecit to pull to within two late. However, Wesleyan hung on for the 25-23 win.
  • Illinois Tech fell to RIT 25-16, 25-19, 26-24.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Alyssa Miner played some of her best volleyball of the season on Friday. The freshman middle talled 18 total kills for the day. In the Gallaudet match, she tallied 11 kills and four block assists.
  • Jelena Vujicic also tallied 18 kills on Friday, with 13 coming against Gallaudet.
  • Irena Grauzinis was strong defensivley, tallying 33 digs on Friday and leading Tech in that category in both matches. She also added 10 kills against Virginia Wesleyan.
  • Claire Fraeyman had five total blocks against Gallaudet.
  • Adriane Walther had 50 total assists on Friday and 24 more against Virginia Wesleyan.

Stats to Know

  • Tech had 73 total digs against Gallaudet.
  • FDU-Florham blocked 18 shots against Tech.
  • Tech tallied six aces against VWU.
