The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's volleyball team won the first two sets over the visiting Hornets of Shenandoah University before closing out the match in four sets. Prior to the start of the match, the Maroons honored the four seniors, Kennedy Clemmer, Claire Williams, Katie Finlan, and Jessica Miller, that have been a part of the program for the past four seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Maroons jumped out to an early 7-2 lead over SU before the Hornets used a 7-0 to take a 9-7 lead in the first set.
  • However, it didn't last long as Roanoke responded with a 10-2 run to take a six-point lead midway through the opening set. After stretching it out to 10 points at 24-14, a kill Williams closed out the first set for Roanoke, 25-16
  • Once again, the Maroons used an early run to take seven-point at 12-5, and never looked back. Roanoke would stretch it to a 10-point lead on two occasions later in the set and held on for the 2-0 lead after claiming the second set 25-18.
  • SU won four of the first five points of the third set and did not allow Roanoke back into the set and pulled the match to a 2-1 Maroon lead.
  • RC did not trail in the fourth set and led by as many as eight in the set including the final point, a kill by Rylee Mayer, to give the Maroons the 25-17 set four win and the match 3-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mayer had a match-high 19 kills while committing only three errors for a .356 attack percentage.
  • Kylee Draper had a match-high 34 assists, the same as the Hornets had in total as a team.
  • Clemmer had a team-high 15 digs while Ryanna Clark had the team-high three blocks.
  • The Maroons reached double-digit kills in every set with 13 in the first and fourth and 11 in the second and third sets.

  • Roanoke will be right back on the court on Saturday, September 24 to take on Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action, as a part of Family Weekend activities. First serve with the Royals is scheduled for 11 a.m.
