The Lead: The Roanoke softball team traveled to Virginia Wesleyan to face the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) leading Marlins in a double header. Each team would record a shutout with Virginia Wesleyan winning the opener, 5-0, before the Maroons would post a 2-0 win in the second game to finish the season series with a split.

How it Happened:

  • Jada Karnes and Hannah Hull were locked in a pitchers dual for the first four innings as neither team could drive home a run.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Marlins would finally break the tie with a base hit up the middle.
  • Three unearned runs in the sixth would be all the Marlins needed as the took the opener, 5-0.
  • Karnes went six innings giving up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Rebecca Hensley and Lauryn Chappell had one hit apiece.

How it Happened:

  • Brooke Trapuzzano singled up the middle to score Kate Houle in the top of the fifth for a 1-0 advantage.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Maroons added to their lead with a Hensley base hit that would see Morgan Clark cross home plate for all the runs that Roanoke would need.
  • Shanan Hester pitched six innings, picking up the win, giving up just four hits and no runs. Karnes came in for the seventh to pick up her second save of the season.

Up Next: Roanoke is scheduled to host Bridgewater on Tuesday evening in a double header at the James I Moyer Complex in Salem.
