  • The Short Story: Roanoke opened the 2022-23 season on the road at the Mt. Union Tournament by taking on the Scots of Maryville (Tenn.). Despite a late game comeback, Maryville pulled away for a 90-81 win over the Maroons. The Scots had a 45-32 lead at halftime, but Roanoke pulled within three with just over three minutes left to play. Maryville pushed it back to 11 points with 19 seconds left before Joshua McClary hit two free throws with nine seconds left to provide the final 90-81 margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Scots jumped out to a 6-0 lead just 1:09 into the game. The Maroons responded with an 8-2 run of their own over the next 4:26, capped by a pair of free throws by Joshua Morse. The two teams would go back and forth over the next four minutes with the Scots holding a 16-13 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half.
  • Roanoke pulled within one at 22-21 with a layup by Kasey Draper with 7:24 left in the period. The Scots used a small run to pull ahead by five at 30-25 but a pair of three-pointers and two free throws saw Maryville pull ahead 38-30 with just 3:25 left. The Scots closed out the opening half on a 7-2 run and kept a 45-32 lead at the break.
  • Efosa U-Edosomwan scored the first four points of the second half bringing the Maroons within nine at 45-36. The Scots responded by going on a run to pull ahead by 17 at 55-38 with 15;47 left in the game.
  • After a jump shot put the Scots ahead 69-54 with just under 10 minutes left, Roanoke went on a 20-7 run over the next seven minutes capped by a Draper layup to pull within two at 76-74. However, the Scots went on a run themselves scoring 14 of the final 21 points to pull away for the nine-point win, 90-81.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 41.8 percent from the floor (28-67), and made 21-of-29 free throws (72.4%). The Scots shot 27-of-64 from the field, including 10-for-24 from beyond the arc.
  • The Maroons out rebounded Maryville 44-39 while also leading with 15 assists.
  • Draper had a game-high 25 points to lead the Maroons. It matched the season-opening game from a year ago when he scored 25 against Eastern to open the 2021-22 season.
  • Zach Rosenthal (14 points) and U-Edosomwan (13 points) also reached double-digits.
  • Maryville had five players score in double figures led by Charlie Cochran's 20.
