  • The Short Story: The Roanoke men's basketball team nearly came from behind against No. 17 Guilford, but the Quakers held on after a big first half for a 61-50 win over the Maroons in Greensboro. Kasey Draper led all scorers with 20 points and Justin Kuthan finished with 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a tight game in the first 10 minutes with the Quakers having a slim 13-10 lead over Roanoke at 11:16. Neither team could find the bottom of the net in the next two minutes before Joshua McClary hit a jumper to pull the Maroons within one at 9:17, 13-12. Draper kept it a two-point game at with a made basket with 6:29 left in the first half, but a Quaker basket put the lead up to six with 3:50 remaining. Kuthan cut the lead down to eight with just over a minute remaining before Guilford made a layup and had a 29-19 lead at the break.
  • The second half saw both teams make small runs with the Quakers leading by as many as 15 with 15:20 left in the game before the Maroons pulled within seven, 48-41, with 9:08 left on a McClary layup. From that point, Guilford put their lead back up 13 before McClary made a layup with four seconds left as the Quakers escaped with a 61-50 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 34% from the floor on 18 of 53 shooting.
  • Both teams went to the free-throw line 11 times, with the Maroons making 10 and Guilford making just six.
  • In addition to Draper's 20 points, McClary also finished in double figures with 15.
