Roanoke falls to Guilford, 4-2, in Penalty Kicks

The Basics: ODAC Semifinals
Score: #7 Roanoke 1 | #6 Guilford 1 (4-2 in PK)

Records: Maroons 3-1-4 | Quakers 6-2-2
Location: Greensboro, N.C.

The Lead: After upsetting the #2 seed Washington and Lee on the road, the Roanoke men's soccer team was looking to advance to the finals of the 2020-21 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Tournament when they traveled to Greensboro on Friday night. The match against the #6 Quakers of Guilford would be delayed by more than two hours due to lightning with the Maroons leading 1-0. A late Guilford goal would tie it up with less than 20 minutes left to play. Neither team would score in the two overtime periods and the match would go to Penalty Kicks. Guilford got stops on the first two Roanoke attempts and would advance to the Finals by winning in PKs, 4-2.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke would score when Dylan Berk took a feed from Nathan Carey at the 19:30 mark and beat the Quaker keeper.
  • Just minutes later the match would be halted due to lightning and hail in the area and wouldn't resume for over two hours.
  • The Maroons would limit their hosts to just one, first half, shot, taking the 1-0 lead into the half.
  • Roanoke would continue to control much of the play until the Quakers broke through and scored the equalizer with just under 20 minutes left to play.
  • The Maroons would out-shoot Guilford 6-0 the rest of the way but couldn't score as the match headed to the first overtime period.
  • Four minutes into the first extra frame, Liam Camilleri fired a shot from the left side that hit the crossbar and the match continued.
  • Moments later Berk sent a ball into the box that was headed by Alec Taitague to Camilleri who was denied by a diving Guilford keeper.
  • With three seconds to go, Chris Jerrild picked up a loose ball on the right side but was once again stopped by a diving save from Zach Van Kampen and the match went into the second overtime period.
  • Three minutes into the second overtime, Roanoke appeared to win the match when Jake Berecz beat the keeper but the whistle had blown and the score would be disallowed.
  • When a Berk shot was stopped in the final minute, the match would have to be decided on Penalty Kicks.
  • For the 110 minutes of play, Roanoke led in shots, 21-6, and shots on goal, 10-4. Zach Behe recorded three saves.

Penalty Kicks: Van Kampen would record a pair of saves on the first two Roanoke attempts while the Quakers would score on their first four tries to advance to the ODAC Finals, 4-2, in penalty kicks.
