Maroons Sweep Doubleheader With Elizabethtown on Sunday

The Basics

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team trailed by one going into the seventh and scored three runs in their half of the inning to earn the come-from-behind win over Elizabethtown in game one on Sunday. The Maroons followed up with another come-from-behind win in game two to sweep the two-game series.

Highlights:

  • The Maroons got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Jacob Bonzon led off with a double before Jonny Wall hit a groundout two batters later that allowed Bonzon to cross the plate.
  • Elizabethtown responded with three runs in the top of the second and added a fourth run in the top of the fourth to give them a 4-1 lead. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth and one out, Mason Staz singled to center and was followed up with a Nate Prince double that put runners on second and third. A groundout to the shortstop kept Prince at second, but M. Staz was able to score on the throw. After Prince reached third on a wild pitch, Jack Carpin hit a double to left field that Prince scored on, cutting the Blue Jay lead to 4-3. 
  • Spencer Rhoads led off with a single and Bonzon walked to start the seventh. A single by Wall loaded the bases and a double by M. Staz cleared them and gave Roanoke the 6-4 lead that they kept for the win. 
  • Aiden Kuhle earned the win in relief with 3.0 innings of work with four strikeouts and allowing just one hit.

Highlights:

  • The Blue Jays scored the first two runs of game two with a run in each of the second and fourth innings. Ty Staz led off the bottom of the fourth for the Maroons with a single to center field and Corey Butler singled to left to put T. Staz at third. M. Staz hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher that allowed both runners to advance, allowing his younger brother to score cutting the EC lead down to 2-1.
  • The top of the sixth inning saw the Blue Jays add a pair of runs on a triple to center, extending their lead to 4-1. Roanoke responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, tying the score at 4-4. The Maroons started off with a walk to Bonzon, a Blue Jay error, and a walk to Wall to load the bases with no outs. Butler then hit a double to center that scored T. Staz and Bozon, cutting the lead to 4-3. A sacrifice fly by M. Staz scored Wall to level the game at four runs apiece. 
  • Elizabethtown retook the lead in the top of the seven with three runs with two outs, including a two-run home run to left. 
  • Continuing the score of the past two innings, the Maroons started off with a walk to Bonzon, the second walk in a row to start an inning for him, and a single by T. Staz to put runners on first and second. A double steal by T. Staz and Bonzon saw a throwing error by the catcher that allowed Bonzon to score, cutting the lead down to 7-5. With two outs, M. Staz singled up the middle of the field scoring his brother to cut the lead to 7-6. Two-straight hit by pitch to Prince and Corey Coogan loaded the bases. A single by Nate Chown to center scored both Prince and M. Staz and gave the Maroons an 8-6 lead. Bonzon was hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance of the inning that scored a run. T. Staz followed that up with a single to short that scored a run, giving the Maroons the 10-7 lead. 
  • The Roanoke defense held up in the eighth and ninth innings, preventing any more runs to score and allowing the Maroons to complete the sweep.
  • Evan Parks earned his first win of the season pitching the seventh inning for the Maroons and finishing with two strikeouts. Anthony Sullivan earned the first Roanoke save of the season pitching the ninth inning with one strikeout.
  • T. Staz finished the game with three runs, three hits, and an RBI. 

Up next: The Maroons are back at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5 to host the two-day Roanoke Round-Robin. On Saturday, the Maroons start off with a contest against Franklin & Marshall at 10 a.m. before a neutral game between the Diplomats and Marietta. Roanoke finishes the first day with a contest against Brockport at 6 p.m.
