Roanoke Splits with Bridgewater in ODAC Action

The Basics – Game One
Score: Bridgewater 5, Roanoke 3
Records: Roanoke 15-18, 6-7 ODAC / Bridgewater 7-22, 2-9 ODAC
Location: Bridgewater, Va.

The Lead: Bridgewater used a five run fifth inning and then held off a late rally to top Roanoke 5-3 on Tuesday.

How it Happened:

  • Taylor Carter produced the first run of the game in the third inning all on her own as she was hit by a pitch with two outs. She then stole second, went to third on a passed ball and came home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Maroons.
  • In the decisive fifth inning, BC scored five runs on four hit and took advantage of two Maroon errors.
  • A Hannah Nyquist single with two outs brought in the final two runs, which proved to be the difference in the game.
  • A single by Carter put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh inning.
  • Erin Forbes then singled to make the core 5-2 and Katie Smith singled to score 5-3.
  • That would be as close as RC would get as BC would get the last out of the game with the go-ahead run at the plate.
  • Teresa Wagner went four innings for RC allowing three runs as her record dropped to 2-8. Brianna Cox went the first four innings for BC and allowed just one hit to improve to 4-9. Hannah Trala went the last three innings to pick up the save.

The Lead: Roanoke had a huge six-run inning in the top of the fifth to help them win 10-1 in five innings.

  • Rachel Guilliams grounded out, but Forbes was still able to score. Mattie Morris singled to center field to score Smith giving Roanoke the 3-0 advantage.
  • In the top of the second, a Forbes single up the middle was able to score Carter extending Roanoke's lead to 4-0.
  • Bridgewater would score its only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to narrow the margin.
  • RC rallied to score six runs in the top of the fifth that included a timely two-RBI single up the middle while also taking advantage of three Bridgewater errors.
  • In the circle for the Maroons, Emily Salsberry improved to 3-2 on the year after throwing 4.1 innings while only giving up one run. Courtney Oliver threw the remaining two outs in the game.
  • At the plate, Carter went 3-for-4 for Roanoke with two RBI and two runs scored while stealing one base. Ruthie Williams, Morris and Wenger all went 2-for-3 at the plate while Morris and Wenger both picked up an RBI.
