The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team took game one against No. 3 Shenandoah, 7-6, before dropping game two to the visiting Hornets 6-3 in an ODAC doubleheader played at the Salem Kiwanis Field.

Highlights:

  • SU was able to get on the scoreboard first in both the first and third innings with a single run in each to take a 2-0 lead. The Maroons got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Roanoke started with a walk to Mason Staz. A throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt at first saw M. Staz reach all the way to third base. On the next pitch, Jonny Wall hit a single to shallow center that M. Staz was able to score on to cut the Hornet lead in half.
  • A pair of SU runs in the top of the fifth saw them put their lead up to three as Roanoke came up in the bottom of the frame. On the first pitch, Brody Langlotz hit a deep fly ball over the left field fence that saw the Hornet defense not even move, knowing the ball was long gone for a home run that cut the Hornet lead to two.
  • Another single run by the Maroons in the bottom of the sixth from Wall saw Roanoke pull within two with three innings to go, 4-3.
  • With two outs in the seventh, M. Staz took a pitch over the fence in right-center for a solo home run that tied the score at 4-4. Next up Wall walked before a pitching change by the Hornets. Conner Butler followed up with a deep ball to left center that took a sideways ricochet off the wall and saw Wall score from first on the triple, giving the Maroons their first lead of the game.
  • SU responded in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs of their own with two outs to retake the lead, 6-5. But for the second-straight inning, Roanoke responded with runs with two outs. After the Hornets got a line out to left and a ground out to the shortstop, Langlotz got another hit, this time a single through the left side before Noah Basham came in to pinch hit for Justyn Steens. Basham then took a 0-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left field for a 2-run, 2-RBI home run that put Roanoke back ahead, 7-6 as the teams headed into the ninth. Alex Markus came in the ninth to pitch and got a three-up, three-down including a pair of strikeouts to secure the 7-6 game-one win for the Maroons.
  • Isaac Brooks earned his second win in as many appearances after coming in the eighth inning with one out while Markus earned his second save of the season.

  • Two more runs by the Hornets in the top of the fifth saw SU grab a 6-1 lead as the teams headed into the sixth. Owen Lawn led off the home team's half of the frame with a double down the left-field line before scoring off a Langlotz single to left for the Maroons' second run of the game.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Butler launched a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run that cut the lead down to 6-3. However, both teams remained scoreless in the final two innings as the Hornets earned a split with the Maroons with the 6-3 win in game two.
