
STAUNTON, Va. - Tyler Smith drove in the winning run with a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday afternoon as Mary Baldwin defeated Hampden-Sydney College 12-11 in non-conference action.
Hampden-Sydney scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but MBU battled back to tie the score with one run in the bottom of the first and four runs in the fourth.
Noah Kessler doubled with one out in the first and a pair of wild pitchers allowed Kessler to score, trimming the Tigers' lead to 5-1.
With two outs in the fourth, Dylan Rankin doubled and took third on a single by Michael Barber. Tyler Morley and Smith followed with consecutive run-scoring singles to pull the Squirrels to within 5-3. Lucas Chinault singled down the left-field line, chasing home two runners to even the score at 5-5.
Four runs in the top of the fifth put the Tigers up 9-5, but single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings kept the Squirrels close. Morley's solo homer in the sixth made the score 9-7.
H-SC scored twice in the seventh to lead 11-7, but MBU answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh on Rankin's RBI-single, slicing the deficit to 11-8.
MBU pinch-hitter Tyler Helbert singled to drive in a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 11-9, setting the stage for Mary Baldwin's three-run rally in the ninth.
Kessler walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth and Jush Lallo followed with a two-run homer to tie the score, 11-11. Rankin then walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Barber. After an intentional walk to Morley, Smith lined a double down the left-field line scoring Rankin with the game-winning run.
Morley finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Rankin and Smith each finished 2-for-4.
Matthew Plotner pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Tucker Hensley picked up the win with a perfect ninth.
MBU is back in action this weekend withen the Squirrels welcome William Peace to Moxie Stadium for a three-game series.
