Emory & Henry Football Rolls Over Greensboro, 38-0, Saturday On Coach Lou Wacker Day

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Football Team (2-0) picked up its first shutout since the 2002 season Saturday afternoon as the Wasps downed the Pride of Greensboro College, 38-0, at Fred Selfe Stadium. The last time E&H held an opponent scoreless was in a 10-0 victory over Guilford on Nov. 16, 2002. Former Emory & Henry head football coach Lou Wacker was also honored at halftime of the contest.

The Wasps rolled up 476 yards of total offense with sophomore quarterback Kyle Boden (Knoxville, Tenn.) throwing for 370 yards for four touchdowns on 33-for-46 passing. The last time an E&H signal caller tossed for more than 300 yards was October 16, 2004, when Todd Woods had 370 yards against Randolph-Macon.

On the first possession of the game, the Wasps drove 70 yards on eight plays for a quick score. Boden was five-for-six for 70 yards on the stretch, finding junior wide receiver Preston Jennings (Banner Elk, N.C.) for an 11-yard catch and the touchdown.

After forcing a Greensboro punt, the Wasps pushed their lead to 10-0 on a 40-yard field goal by junior kicker Matt Turchin (Salisbury, N.C.). E&H would add another touchdown before the half to take a 17-0 lead into the locker room. Boden found senior wide receiver Adrian Jordan (Covington, Va.) at the end of a 24-yard pass for the score.

In the second half, E&H scored on three straight drives spanning from 4:15 in the third quarter to the 8:11 mark in the fourth. A 41-yard Boden to Jennings reception and a 19-yard catch by freshman Sam Edmonds (Roanoke, Va.) both resulted in scores and the Wasps punched in one touchdown on the ground, a one-yard rush by junior running back William Pearl (Atlanta, Ga.).

Jennings led the way with 10 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan caught four passes for 51 yards and a score. Running backs junior Adam Pugh (Norwalk, Ohio) and sophomore Marquius Young (Oakwood, Ga.) had 40 and 36 yards on the ground, respectively.

Greensboro was led offensively by freshman quarterback Ryan Throndset (Woodbine, Md.) with 56 yards passing. Senior running back Robert Byrd (Atlanta, Ga.) had 55 yards on the ground and senior wide receiver Joey Porter (Reidsville, N.C.) caught six passes for 41 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Emory & Henry senior linebacker Travis Bolt (Willis, Va.) led all players with 11 tackles while junior linebacker Devan Sproles (Norton, Va.) had nine stops. Senior defensive end Daniel Preston (Kingsport, Tenn.) had five tackles including 2.5 for loss and senior linebacker Shane Wicks (Honaker, Va.) made six stops and blocked a Greensboro field goal attempt.

Defensively for Greensboro, senior safety Cody McCray (Greensboro, N.C.) and senior linebacker Allen Stallings (Manteo, N.C.) had 10 tackles each and sophomore linebacker Julian Cinotti (Jacksonville, Fla.) had seven stops. Junior defensive lineman Damion Reed (McCall, S.C.) had a fumble recovery and senior defensive back Jerry Bates (Richland, N.C.) picked off a pass.
