Hampden-Sydney Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry In ODAC Doubleheader Sunday

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College Baseball Team (14-9, 9-7 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins over visiting Emory & Henry College (4-12, 3-12 ODAC) Saturday. The Tigers opened the day with an 8-6 win and finished things out, 10-2, to complete the sweep.

Game One – Hampden-Sydney 8, Emory & Henry 6
The Tigers plated four runs in the bottom of the first with Ryan Boyce and Nick Grohowski both hitting two-run singles. E&H got on the board in the second as senior designated hitter Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) hit a solo home run to make the score 4-1. In the bottom of the frame, HSC scored two on a throwing error for a 6-1 lead.

Emory & Henry got a run back in the fourth when sophomore catcher Nathan Treadway (Valdese, N.C.) singled to left field and closed the gap to 6-4 in the fifth on a two-run single to centerfield by Kezele. Hampden-Sydney scored a pair in the fifth to extend its lead to 8-4 with Grohowski highlighting the frame with a triple to right-center.

The Wasps plated individual runs in the sixth and eighth, but would get no closer than the 8-6 final margin.

Trenton Tiller earned the win for the Tigers, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Ethan Snyder picked up the save, pitching the final out of the contest. Wasp senior Noah Griffin (Fort Mill, S.C.) suffered the loss, allowing six earned run on 12 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.

Game Two – Hampden-Sydney 10, Emory & Henry 2
Hampden-Sydney got on the board in the second on a single to right field by Boyce. E&H tied the contest, 1-1, in the third as sophomore second baseman Eli Milhorn (Bluff City, Tenn.) singled to right to drive in senior shortstop Caleb Haynes (Covington, Va.).

The Tigers scored two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for a 7-1 advantage. Grohowski had a pair of two-run hits in the fourth and fifth to highlight the span. After HSC added another run in the sixth, E&H freshman outfielder Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) drilled a double down the left field line to drive in senior first baseman Joe Tolone (Concord, N.C.) making the score 8-2. Hampden-Sydney added two final runs in the eighth for the 10-2 margin.

Justin Woodall earned the win for HSC, scattering two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over seven innings. E&H senior J.T. Agosto (Cornelius, N.C.) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 13 hits in 4.2 innings.
