UMW Softball Drops Two at Bridgewater on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of close games at Bridgewater College on Thursday afternoon, dropping the opener, 3-2, and game two, 5-3. UMW slips to 9-3 on the season.

In the opener, Bridgewater scored one in the second, but UMW answered with two in the third. Aminah Shakir and Bridget Laychak walked, and Erica Shoop singled to load the bases, and Emma Schieda followed with a two-run double. Bridgewater tied the score in the third, and added the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. 

Laychak led the offense with a single in addition to her two-run double. Junior Caitlyn Burch took the loss to slip to 5-1 on the season. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts.

In the second game, the game remained scoreless until the fifth, when both teams scored three runs. For UMW, Brigid Ward posted an RBI double ahead of an RBI single from Shakir, and Wards scored on an error. Bridgewater plated three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the win.

Hannah Steele and Ward each had doubles in UMW's six-hit attack. Samantha Stuart took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they visit Mary Baldwin University at noon for a doubleheader.
