Martin, Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts UMW Women Past RMC, 73-70

Junior guard Ashley Martin scored a game-high 22 points, and sophomore Sydney Sherman, freshman guard Megan Baxter and senior guard Bri Harper combined for 21 points - all in the fourth quarter - as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team overcame a double digit deficit in the final 10 minutes to defeat Randolph Macon College, 73-70, on Wednesday evening in Ashland, Va. The Eagles improve to 15-5 on the season.

Both teams battled back and forth through the first quarter, with neither side able to mount a run. The Yellow Jackets took the biggest lead of the frame on the last shot, a three pointer with 12 seconds left, to open a 14-8 lead heading to the second.

In the second, Martin scored on back-to-back possessions, and senior Emily Shively followed with a pair of free throws to draw UMW to within 16-14 with 7:07 remaining. Senior Tory Martin followed with a basket to knot the score, and after a Yellow Jacket basket, sophomore Keagan Schwab connected for a three pointer to give UMW the lead. RMC responded by scoring the next nine points, and led 27-19 with 3:39 to go before halftime. The Eagles scored the final two buckets of the second quarter to draw the Eagles to within seven, at 32-25.

Much like the first quarter, the third saw the teams go back and forth, with neither able to string together baskets for a run, as the margin swung back and forth between four and nine points. RMC scored the final basket of the frame to take a 51-41 lead to the fourth.

The final frame saw the Eagles cut free, scoring 32 points, including eight from Harper, seven from Baxter, and six from Sherman - their only points of the contest, but coming in clutch time, as UMW roared ahead. Baxter started the comeback with two three pointers and a steal in a run that saw the margin shrink from 12 to six points in the opening 2:11. Sherman then added a basket to move UMW to within 53-49, and a three pointer from Harper with 4:03 put UMW back into the lead, and they wouldn't trail again, as Sherman hit a pair of key baskets in the closing minutes.

Ashley Martin led the Eagles with 22 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor. Tory Martin scored 12 points as the only other Eagle in double figures.

UMW shot 51% from the field (25-49), making 7-18 three point shots and 16-21 free throws. Randolph Macon shot 46% (23-50), making 6-13 three point attempts and 18-28 free throws.

The Eagles will be back in action again on Saturday when they host Coast to Coast Athletic Conference foe Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
