UMW Women's Lax Falls to #2 W&L, 19-11, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-11 decision to second-ranked Washington & Lee University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 6-4 on the season.

The high-scoring first quarter saw the Generals build a 7-3 lead. The teams traded the first four goals, with Molly Daw and Erin Steinberg scoring. W&L then scored four straight, before Katie Blair cut the margin to 6-3 with a free position score with 40 seconds left. W&L scored the last goal of the period.

In the second, Maya Koebke pulled the Eagles to within 7-4 with 13:53 remaining, but the Generals scored six unanswered goals to take a 13-4 lead to halftime.

The teams played the third quarter even up, with each team scoring four times. Steinberg opened the scoring on a Koebke assist, and Koebke scored a pair of unassisted goals midway through. After a W&L score, Koebke scored again with 2:07 left.

In the fourth, UMW opened the scoring with a Blair goal, and Steinberg scored two goals on assists from Kayla Sarazin.

The Generals led in shots, 26-24, and in draw controls, 19-14. UMW goalkeepers Cailyn Tripp (six saves) and Brooke Barsella (one) combined in goal for the Eagles, while Sarazin had four draw controls and two ground balls to go with her three assists.Steinberg and Koebke led with four goals apiece.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Messiah College at 1:00 p.m.
