Roanoke College, ranked No. 13 in this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Div. III poll, converted four man-up opportunities during the second quarter to break open its game with The College of Wooster and went on to a 16-4 victory in the teams' non-conference match-up Wednesday night at Salem, Va.
Wooster (3-3) was only trailing 3-0 after one quarter, but committed four costly penalties that helped Roanoke (4-2) pull out to a 9-2 halftime lead. Four of the Maroons' five second-quarter goals were during extra-man chances.
The seven-goal deficit was too much for the young Fighting Scots to overcome.
Pat Henderson scored twice for Wooster, while Tom Herold and Patrick Schlick contributed the team's other goals.
A bright spot for the Scots was the play of goalie Matt Magoon, who tallied a career-high 21 saves as well as five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
After a four-game road swing, Wooster returns home for four in a row, starting with Adrian College (4-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
