Eagle Field Hockey Team Blanks Va. Wesleyan, 2-0


VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The University of Mary Washington field hockey team used a pair of first half scores in topping Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-0, on Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Virginia Beach. The Eagles improve to 9-5 on the season.

The Eagle jumped ahead with 26:53 left in the first half when junior Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) scored on an assist from freshman Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne). Jones then set up the second goal with 13:41 left in the half, assisting on sophomore Carleigh Bowler (Fredericksburg, Va., Stafford)'s score.

The Eagles outshot the Marlins, 23-16, and had six penalty corners to seven for Va. Wesleyan. Junior goalie Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) made nine saves for Mary Washington, while VWC's Chesley Baker had 15 saves.

Mary Washington will host Sweet Briar College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
