George's Two Scores Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Bridgewater, 3-0


Sophomore midfielder Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) scored a pair of second half goals to propel the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-0 victory at Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 1-2 on the season.

After a scoreless first half in which UMW held a sizeable 14-2 edge in shots, the Eagles capitalized with George scoring on an assist from senior Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass., Scituate) eight minutes into the second half. George then scored again unassisted six minutes later to up the lead to 2-0.

Junior Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) capped the scoring on an assist from Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) with two minutes remaining. UMW outshot Bridgewater, 26-2, and had 22 penalty corners to one for the home team. Chrissy Bowdren had one save for UMW, while Taylor Waddell had eight stops for Bridgewater.

Mary Washington will visit Lebanon Valley College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in another road contest against a nationally-ranked foe.
