UMW Women's Lax Opens With 14-6 Win at Lynchburg

Freshman Maya Koebke scored five goals in her collegiate debut and junior Katie Blair added four as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season with a 14-6 victory at the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead with scores from Blair and Koebke in the opening minutes, and extended the lead to 5-1 after the first quarter, as Blair added two scores and Koebke another. In the second, the Eagles reeled off four straight goals, from Koebke, Kayla Sarazin, Blair, and Clare Madden, and carried a 9-1 lead to halftime.

Koebke opened the third quarter scoring, and, after a pair of Lynchburg goals, Madden and Sarazin added their second scores of the day to close out the third. Koebke and Kimber Konen scored in the fourth.

The Eagles led in shots, 28-21, as well as draw controls, 13-10. UMW goalkeepers Cailyn Tripp and Brooke Barsella teamed for 13 saves on the day. Sarazin added seven draw controls.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 4:00 p.m.
