Wittenberg Keeps Even Keel With Another 1-1 Day

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - After exacting revenge on Eastern Mennonite by a score of 5-4, the Tigers let a 1-0 decision slide against Kings College on Wednesday.

Sophomore Haley Gerken (Logan, Ohio/Logan) led the Tiger offense in game one thanks to a two-run double to left field in the second inning. Wittenberg added another run in the third and two more in the fourth to complete their scoring. Eastern Mennonite made it a game with three runs in the fifth inning, but could not complete the comeback, and the Tigers cruised through the last two innings to the victory.

In game two versus Kings College, fate was not so kind to the Tigers. Kings scored one run in the first inning, and that was all they would need, as Wittenberg failed to put anyone across the plate. After giving up the lone run, the Red & White pitching and defense tightened down and kept Kings at bay. Junior pitcher Rachael Hatcher (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton) did her portion, throwing six innings and giving up only six hits while walking just two.

Unfortunately, the Tiger offense managed just four hits in support of Hatcher, who took the loss to drop to 2-2 on the season despite solid outings in all of her appearances.

Coach Becky Hall and her softball squad will take Thursday off before playing Mary Washington and Ferrum in the spring break finale on Friday. Wednesday's action keeps the team at .500 with a 4-4 record.
