#17 UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at #16 W&L, 16-10

The 17th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-10 decision at \#16 Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The Eagles fall to 4-2 on the season, and 2-2 against nationally-ranked teams.

Playing without sophomore All-American attacker Catherine Kennedy, who missed the game with the flu, the Eagles stayed tight for the first 30 minutes, trailing by a 7-6 margin at halftime. The Eagles used three goals from junior Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) in the first half to lead the way.

The Generals outscored the Eagles, 9-4, in the second half to pull away. Senior Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn., Joel Barlow) scored three times for UMW, who got two goals from sophomore attacker Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson). Washington & Lee was led by Emmy Matthews' four goals and two assists.

Mary Washington led in shots, 30-27, and in ground balls, 19-18. Each team committed 22 turnovers. Freshman Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) made three saves and Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga., Walton) two in splitting time in the Eagle goal.

Sophomore Jenny Atmar (Houston, Texas, Bellaire) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Eagles, who will visit Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
