Scots Open Tourney with Two Wins

Hayley Nash ATLANTA, Ga. -- The College of Wooster volleyball team opened the Emory Classic Tournament strong with two wins, defeating Averett University 3-2 and St. Mary's College (Ind.) 3-1.

The Scots now hold their longest winning streak of the season at three, sitting at 6-13 overall.

Wooster won a thrilling five-setter in its opening match downing Averett 21-25, 28-26, 25-27, 25-22, 15-8.

After losing the first set, the Scots held on late to win a much-needed second set. They then fought for the match in the fourth with another close outcome.

Both teams were tied at 20, 21 and 22 in the fourth set until Wooster scored the final three points, which featured two attack errors and a final kill from Hayley Nash.

Wooster then dominated the fifth set, opening and finishing strong. Averett (15-7)was able to tie it at eight, but Wooster scored the final seven points with Sydney Fitzcharles serving. She had four aces in that span.

Nash had a match-high 17 kills. Amelia Mitchell added 14, and Caroline Dillard recorded 11.

In game two, Wooster defeated St. Mary's (5-15) for the second time this season, this time at 23-25, 25-9, 25-20, 25-22.

Wooster's second set win set the tone for the rest of the match. Even after losing the first three points, Wooster took a massive 13-4 lead. They went from trailing 4-2 to winning 19-5.

Nash tied the single game record for aces in a game with nine. She also had eight kilsl and 10 digs in the game.

Tyara Thompson finished with 32 assists. Fitzcharles led the way with 15 digs.

Wooster returns to action Saturday when they face 11th-ranked Emory University.
