Roanoke Defeats Scarlet Hawks in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO—The front end of the Puerto Rico Classic pitted the Illinois Institute of Technology women's basketball team against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Roanoke College on the campus of Colegio Universitario de San Juan on Thursday. The Maroons led from start-to-finish in a 56-25 decision over the Scarlet Hawks.

IIT falls to 0-9, while Roanoke improves to 6-3.

An 18-4 run to open the game was the ammunition Roanoke needed to secure the victory. Both teams managed just one made three-point basket in the contest while no players finished with double-figure scoring.

Erin Nelson paced the Scarlet Hawks with seven points, and tied for a season-high seven rebounds for the fifth time in 2019-20. Shannon O'Donnell also contributed seven points for IIT.

A whopping 16 players saw significant playing time for Roanoke, 13 of which contributed points. Kristina Harrell, who entered the contest leading the ODAC with a .889 (32-36) free throw percentage and a team-leading 10.6 points per game, was held to just two points on 1-of-5 shooting against the Scarlet Hawks. Molly Hassell paced all players with nine points for the Maroons.

The Scarlet Hawks will square-off against another ODAC squad in Shenandoah University tomorrow, Friday, December 20 in San Juan, Puerto Rico at 11:00 a.m. (CT).
