UMW Field Hockey Tops Virginia Wesleyan, 4-0


Freshman Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan at the Olympic Training Center in Virginia Beach on Sunday. The Eagles improve to 7-6 on the season.

Baker opened the scoring five minutes into the game on an assist from junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford). Freshman Brenna Hill (McLean, Va., Langley) scored on a pass from MacKenzie Sloan (Earlysville, Va., Albemarle) with 20 minutes left. The Eagles held a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Senior defender Kristen Haynor (Oakton, Va., James Madison) scored five minutes into the second half on an assist from freshman Mallory Peebles (Yorktown, Va., Tabb). Baker closed the scoring with three minutes left.

The Eagles outshot Va. Wesleyan, 24-9, and had five penalty corners to four for the hosts. Kirsten Olson had nine saves for Va. Wesleyan, while Katie Gerbes (Forest Hill, Md., Fallston) had four saves among three Eagle goalies to combine on the win.

Mary Washington will host Roanoke College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
