ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: February 21, 2011

BASEBALL
SAMMY STUART, Guilford, Senior, Pitcher
Stuart, a senior from Monroe, N.C., threw four scoreless innings of two-hit ball out of the bullpen leading Guilford to a 9-8 win over Greensboro College. His efforts allowed the to post the comeback win in the final few innings. Stuart struck out three batters, stranded five runners on base and held the Pride to a .182 batting average. He also fanned three hitters. Stuart has the team’s top ERA at 3.65 so far this season.

BASEBALL
JAY THOMPSON, Bridgewater, Junior, Third Base
Thompson, a junior from Waynesboro, Va., had a big weekend on the road as the Eagles split a pair of contest against quality competition. Against Cortland St., 2010 D-III runner-up and preseason No. 2 in the nation, Thompson was 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and one RBI to help lead the Eagles to a 15-14 victory. In a loss to CNU, Thompson was 3-for-4 with two homers, two runs scored and three RBIs. For the weekend, his batting average was .777 with a slugging percentage of 1.555.

INDOOR TRACK
RANDY LOTT, Virginia Wesleyan, Freshman
Lott, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., turned in an excellent effort in the 55-meter dash at the Mason-Dixon Conference championships at Christopher Newport University. He broke VWC’s record in the event three times in the meet en route to finishing as the Mason-Dixon champion in the event. He started it in the prelims with a time of 6.60, breaking the previous VWC record of 6.86 set by Josh Smith in 2006. He broke his own record in the semifinals with a time of 6.55 and then topped that in the finals with a championship time of 6.51. He also placed 11th in the 200-meter dash (23.67).

INDOOR TRACK
ERICA GARBER, Eastern Mennonite, Freshman
Garber, a freshman from Canby, Ore., won the triple jump Saturday at the DuCharme Invitational and also took over the top spot in the ODAC in process. Her distance of 10.92m (35-10.0) won the triple jump over W&L’s Marissa Thompson (10.63m). It was a personal best for Garber as she has improved her distance in each of her four collegiate meets.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
TODD PHILLIPS, Eastern Mennonite, Senior, Forward
Phillips, a senior from Waynesboro, Va., wrapped up his final regular season by helping the Runnin Royals to three big wins over a six-day stretch. EMU enters the ODAC Tournament on an eight-game winning streak, which is tied for the best in program history. Phillips helped the Royals jump to a 17-2 lead on No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan Monday night and led all scorers with 22 points in the 86-71 win. He finished with his second consecutive double double as he added 11 rebounds and a game high five assists. Wednesday in his final home game, Todd Phillips helped EMU avenge an earlier loss to Washington & Lee. Phillips was 7-of-10, including 5-of-8 from three point range, for another 22 points as well as eight rebounds. Saturday, he had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists as the Royals locked up the ODAC’s third seed with an 84-82 double overtime win at Guilford. For the week, Phillips shot 18-of-37 from the floor and averaged 18.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals. He finished the regular season second in the ODAC in scoring at 18.5 per game. He is also second in the conference in free throws and is in the ODAC’s top ten in field goals, free throw percentage, assists, and steals.

MEN'S LACROSSE
MICAH KELLER, Hampden-Sydney, Junior, Attack
Keller, a junior from Richmond, Va., scored eight goals with one assist in the season opener vs. Mary Washington. He needed just 11 shots to do his work, scoring three man up goals while also scooping two groundballs. The eight goals is the second most in single game H-SC history.

MEN'S TENNIS
TYLER MERCIER, Guilford, Freshman, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Mercier, a freshman from Bennington, Neb., won all three matches at first singles and teamed with Clayton Hamilton for three first-doubles wins, which helped the Quakers win their first three matches of the season. Mercier won all of his singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-3, 7-5 win over his top-seeded rival from Division II Winston-Salem State. The Quakers' victories also included their first ODAC win of the season over Randolph-Macon.

SOFTBALL
CAITLIN DOLBY, Lynchburg, Senior, Pitcher
Dolby, a senior from Laurel, Del., earned the win in the second game against Meredith College on Saturday, working 4 2/3 innings with seven hits, no walks and just one earned run. She also fanned a batter.

SOFTBALL
AMI HUTCHERSON, Guilford, Senior, Outfield
Hutcherson, a senior from Staley, N.C., went 8-for-14 in the opening weeken of the season with three multi-hit games. She opened the year with a 2-for-4 showing with two runs in a win against Ferrum. She added six more hits in seven at-bats in two games against Methodist, adding a pair of runs. Hutcherson owns a .571 batting average after four games.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
KALA YODERS, Eastern Mennonite, Freshman, Forward
Yoders, a freshman from Myerstown, Pa., responded to her first three starts of the season by leading EMU to three straight wins, including an impressive win over Guilford in overtime. In Yoders’ first start, she responded by hitting 8-of-11 shots for a game high 18 points as the women broke the program record for largest winning margin, 101-33 over Randolph. The freshman notched her third double-double Friday against Emory & Henry with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also handed out a game high six assists. Then Saturday against Guilford, Yoders took over late in regulation to lead EMU to the overtime win. She helped erase a late seven-point deficit by scoring EMU’s final six points of regulation, tying the game with 54 seconds left in the second half. In overtime, Yoders added another six points and iced the victory with two free throws with seven seconds on the clock. She scored 21 points (9-of-12 in free throws) and pulled down eight rebounds. Over her three starts this week, Yoders shot 50% from the floor and was 15-of-22 from the free throw line, averaging 18.3 points, 9.0 rebounds (4.3 offensive and 4.7 defensive), and 3.0 assists.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
EMMY MATHEWS, Washington and Lee, Senior, Midfield
Mathews, a senior from Baltimore, Md., led the No. 15 Generals in an 18-17 overtime victory against No. 16 Mary Washington on Sunday. Mathews paced the Generals with five goals while also registering two draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover and going 1-of-2 on free position shots. She notched four of her goals in the first half to help Washington and Lee to an 11-7 hafltime lead.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
ELLEN YEATMAN, Washington and Lee, Junior, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Yeatman, a junior from Little Rock, Ark, went a perfect 2-0 at singles and 2-0 at doubles as W&L swept both Lynchburg and Bridgewater by scores of 9-0 on Saturday. In singles, Yeatman defeated Bridgewater’s Katie Gordon, 6-1, 6-3 and Lynchburg’s Clare Wallendjack by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
