ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: September 12, 2011

 

FOOTBALL
JEFF MEHLHAFF, Bridgewater, Senior, Safety
Mehlhaff, a senior from Louisa, Va., had a big day in the Eagles’ secondary as he played a part in two of Bridgewater’s four forced turnovers against Shenandoah. In the second quarter, Mehlhaff put the Eagles on the scoreboard with an interception and 32-yard return for a touchdown to give BC a 7-6 lead midway through the frame. In the fourth quarter, Mehlhaff forced a fumble of a Shenandoah receiver at the BC two-yard line, thwarting a potential scoring play and preserving 28-16 Bridgewater lead (BC eventually won 28-23). Mehlhaff finished with six tackles (five solo), including one for a loss, to go with his interception and forced fumble.

FOOTBALL
TRAVIS LANE, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Quarterback
Lane, a senior from Richmond, Va., was nearly flawless in the Tigers’ 56-17 win over North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday. The Richmond native completed 28 of his 32 attempts while throwing for 389 yards and seven touchdowns. Lane’s 87.5% completion percentage and seven touchdowns both rank second in ODAC history, and his seven scores tie a Hampden-Sydney record. Lane got the offense going from the start, scoring on the third play of the game. He led the Tigers on two more scoring drives in the quarter with five- and nine-yard touchdown passes. The second quarter brought another touchdown pass on a five-yard play to Kyle Vance. On the next drive, Lane led the Tigers 98 yards for the touchdown. Lane went 3-for-3 for 71 yards. The third quarter brought two more scores from Lane with a 25-yard pass to Vance and a one-play scoring drive via a 50-yard pass to Dallas Steelman. Lane capped his day with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Vance in the fourth quarter, the fourth time the duo connected on scoring plays.

FIELD HOCKEY
KELLI WILLIAMS, Lynchburg, Sophomore, Midfielder
Williams, a sophomore from New Castle, Del., scored two goals and dished out an assist en route to a 4-1 victory over fifth-ranked Lebanon Valley College on Saturday. Williams ranks second in the ODAC in both points (10) and goals scored (4) so far this season. The win over Lebanon Valley is first of two consecutive ranked opponents for the 13th-ranked Hornets. They play #2 Messiah on Tuesday.

MEN'S SOCCER
NICK CORNELL, Randolph, Sophomore, Midfielder
Cornell, a sophomore from Front Royal, Va., posted a goal and an assist this week in another pair of Randolph victories. The WildCats are now 5-0 on the season and are the only remaining undefeated team in the ODAC. On Saturday, Cornell dished out a pass to John Adams for a goal in Randolph's win over Gwynedd-Mercy. On Sunday, he netted a game-winner in double overtime in a 1-0 victory over Goucher. On the season, Cornell now has four goals and one helper and has registered points in four straight games.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
JESSICA EDELMAN, Virginia Wesleyan, Junior, Forward
Edelman, a junior from Voorhees, N.J., earns her second straight ODAC weekly honor after leading the Marlins to a trio of wins over the past week. Edelman extended her scoring streak to five consecutive games as she helped guide victories over regionally-ranked Christopher Newport University, Kean University and Western Connecticut State University. She scored the lone goals in the 1-0 wins over CNU and Kean and came through with an assist on VWC's goal to tie WSCU early in the second half. The Marlins went on to win that contest 4-1. Edelman leads VWC with five goals and two assists in a 5-0 start, the best for VWC since 2005. She is tied for the ODAC lead in goals scored and tied for second in points (12).

VOLLEYBALL
M.A. BOLES, Washington and Lee, Sophomore, Outside Hitter
Boles, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, was named MVP of the W&L Invitational as W&L posted a 4-0 weekend to move to 8-0 on the season. She totaled 61 kills (4.7/set) and hit .431 for the weekend. She added 29 digs (2.2/set) and six service aces (0.46/set) to her stat line. Boles notched 20 kills against just two errors and hit .514 in the championship match against Gettysburg (W, 3-0), while adding nine digs. She also posted 19 kills (.378) and 13 digs in a 3-0 win over SVU.

CROSS COUNTRY
TIM SMITH, Roanoke, Senior
Smith, a senior from Roanoke, Va., enjoyed an excellent showing at the Green Terror Invitational hosted by McDaniel College. Smith won the five-kilometer race with a time of 16:45. He also took home the individual title in the shorter three-kilometer run with a time of 9:35. As a team, the Maroons took first in the 5K competition and second in the 3K race.

CROSS COUNTRY
GRACE ENGLAND, Bridgewater College, Junior
England, a freshman from Dublin, Va., placed second overall and first amongst NCAA Division III runners in the five kilometer race at the Green Terror Invitational hosted by McDaniel College. England posted a time of 20:44, 16-seconds behind former All-American and unattached runner, Jill Krebs.
