ODAC Players of the Week

Thru Week Prior to: September 26, 2011

 

FOOTBALL
JEREMY BOWRY, Randolph-Macon, Senior, Linebacker
Bowry, a senior from Chesterfield, Va., helped Randolph-Macon move to 4-0 on the season with a solid defensive effort that included a hand in a pair of turnovers. Bowry made seven stops on the day (3 solo) and collected a Frostburg State fumble. More importantly, he intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. The score marked the second of three unanswered fourth quarter touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets and gave R-MC some breathing room with a 28-14 lead. The intercepted was Bowry's second of the season. He leads the ODAC in interception return yards with 88. His two picks are tied for second.

FOOTBALL
KYLE BODEN, Emory & Henry, Sophomore, Quarterback
Boden, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., became the first Emory & Henry quarterback to throw four touchdown passes since the 2007 season (Daniel Booher) as he led the Wasps to a come-from-behind victory with three second half touchdown passes including the eventual game-winner with 4:15 to play to give E&H a 34-27 win. Boden connected with nine different receivers on the day as he finished 30-of-52 for 245 yards and four scores. He and DaVon Ross teamed up for two touchdowns, including the game's final score. Boden also threw scoring strikes to Cleo Cooper and Chad Williams. The four touchdowns give Boden 11 TD passes on the season, currently second in the ODAC (14 by Travis Lane, H-SC).

FIELD HOCKEY
JENNIFER BATEMAN, Bridgewater, Junior, Defender
Bateman, a junior from Poolesville, Md., aided the Eagles to 2-0 week that included a conference win over Washington and Lee. Bateman netted a pair of goals in a midweek victory over Hood College, including the eventual game-winner. The junior also notched an assist in the victory for a five-point game. On Friday night in Lexington, Bateman scored the second goal of the game for the Eagles and notched a defensive save in a 3-1 victory over Washington and Lee.

GOLF
RICK O'CONNELL, Hampden-Sydney, Sophomore
O'Connell, a sophomore from Goochland, Va., was the top ODAC finisher in each of the first two events of the 2011 fall season. He began the campaign with a third place individual finish in the Shenandoah Invitational via rounds of 75 and 71 at the Winchester Country Club. His two-over par performance helped guide the Tigers to a second place team finish. In the Tom Kinder Memorial, O'Connell won medalist honors as he shot two rounds of 70 and 68 to finish six-under par, helping the Tigers place third as a team. O'Connell's 148 at the Lakeview Golf Course was two shots better than the second place finisher. His second round 68 marked the lowest individual round of the tournament.

MEN'S SOCCER
MITCHELL LEAP, Eastern Mennonite, Senior, Forward
Leap, a senior from Harrisonburg, Va., continues to lead to the resurgent Royals, scoring the winning goal in each of EMU’s two ODAC victories last week. Tuesday at Washington & Lee, Leap knocked in a header just 50 seconds into overtime to seal the 2-1 win. Saturday, he scored the game winner with 45 seconds left before halftime as the Royals handed No. 25 Randolph its first loss of the season, 2-1. Leap has now scored a goal in four straight games and six of the last seven. He leads the ODAC with four game-winning goals and is tied for first with seven scores. He is also second in points at 15. Three of his game-winners have come in conference play as he also leads the ODAC in conference-only goals. The senior gained sole possession of fifth place on EMU’s career points leaderboard at 72 (32 goals/8 assists). Leap is also tied for fourth with 32 career goals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
KATHERINE RUSH, Washington and Lee, Freshman, Midfielder
Rush, a freshman from Cornelius, N.C., finished the week with 10 points (4g, 2a) over two games against Randolph College and Eastern Mennonite. In an 8-0 win over Randolph, she finished with a hat trick, registering two goals in the first half and one in the second, including her first goal of the match coming just 12 seconds in. During the 5-0 triumph over Eastern Mennonite, Rush finished with a goal and two assists. Rush currently leads W&L with 19 points (8g, 3a) and has started every game of her rookie campaign. She also ranks fourth in points (19) and second in goals (8) in the ODAC.

VOLLEYBALL
MALLORY CARTER, Randolph-Macon, Junior, Outside Hitter
Carter, a junior from Moseley, Va., wins her second straight and third overall ODAC weekly honor of the 2011 season. Carter led Randolph-Macon to a 4-1 week including an ODAC win at Randolph and a 3-1 showing at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta where she was named to the All-Tournament Team. Carter had 80 kills on the week, making just 20 errors on 199 attempts for a .302 hitting clip for the week. She had 25 kills and 11 digs against Randolph and followed that up with a 26-kill, 20-dig performance in a five game win over Berry. After losing to host and #4 Emory, Carter helped R-MC rebound with a win over Virginia Wesleyan with 12 kills and four digs. She closed out the tournament with 13 kills and eight digs against Martin Methodist. For the week, Carter averaged 4.71 kills per game and 3.29 digs per contest.

CROSS COUNTRY
TIM SMITH, Roanoke, Senior
Smith, a senior from Roanoke, Va., picks up his second ODAC weekly honor of the season. Smith won his second event of the season, placing first in the Maroon Invitational hosted by Roanoke at Mowles Spring Park in Salem. Smith cross the line in 27:06, out-pacing the field by more than a minute over the eight-kilometer course.

CROSS COUNTRY
GRACE ENGLAND, Roanoke, Junior
England, a freshman from Dublin, Va., picks up her second ODAC weekly accolade of the season. England placed second overall and was the first ODAC finisher at the Maroon Invitational hosted by Roanoke at Mowles Spring Park in Salem. She clipped the line in 20:53 over the five-kilometer course.
