ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THRU WEEK PRIOR TO: JANUARY 23, 2012

 

INDOOR TRACK
Greg Wilson, Lynchburg, Sophomore, Throws
Wilson, a sophomore from Sagamore Beach, Mass., put together a solid week thru a pair of meets. At the LC Sprints, Jumps and Throws Challenge on Wednesday, Wilson threw the shot put 15.30 meters (50' 2"), the second longest at the event. The mark was good for second all-time in the Lynchburg record books, and puts him currently 19th in the nation. He also was fifth in the weight throw with a heave of 13.43 meters (44' 0.75"). At the Marietta Open, Wilson helped LC win the eight-team event. He won the shot put with a toss of 14.89 meters (48' 10.25") and was second in the weight throw with a mark of 13.96 meters (45' 9.75").

INDOOR TRACK
Carmen Graves, Roanoke, Junior, Mid-Distance
Graves, a junior from Christiansburg, Va., picks up her second straight ODAC weekly award after a record-setting performance at the Hokie Invitational over the weekend. Graves competed in 800-meter run and finished fourth overall and first among NCAA Division III competitors with a time of 2:12.17. That time not only set a new ODAC seasonal-best time, but it also topped the ODAC record by nearly four seconds (previous record -- 2:15.83 by LC's Megan Wiseman in 2003). Additionally, Graves' time is the best in all of NCAA Division III this season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Andre Simon, Randolph-Macon, Sophomore, Forward
Simon, a freshman from Newport News, Va., helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a pair of ODAC victories over the past week, extending Randolph-Macon's winning streak to nine games. Simon opened the week with a 15-point 9-rebound showing in an 85-74 win over Lynchburg. He also recorded four steals, an assist and a blocked shot. On Saturday in front of a packed house against Hampden-Sydney, Simon led all scorers with 18 points and a game-best eight rebounds. While he only shot 3-of-9 from the field, he canned 12-of-14 foul shouts to help R-MC to an 86-80 win. Simon tacked on four assists and two steals in his 34 minutes of work. For the season, Simon averages 12.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Jessica Mullen, Bridgewater, Junior, Guard
Mullen, a junior from Purcellville, Va., picks up her third weekly award of the season after helping the Eagles to three wins over the past week. Mullen opened with a 14-point effort in non-conference action against Mary Baldwin (49-39). She came away with seven steals to go with five assists and four rebounds in that contest. On Wednesday, Mullen poured in 28 points as she made 11-of-15 free throws on the way to a 71-59 win over non-conference Frostburg State. She also had five steals and three assists. Mullen saved her best game for last as she notched her third 30-plus point game of the season with 32 points in a 71-59 win over Randolph-Macon. She shot 13-of-21 from the field, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Mullen currently leads the ODAC in scoring (18.1 ppg), field goals made (100) and steals (62).

SWIMMING
Sarah Almond, Randolph-Macon, Senior
Almond, a senior from Estes Park, Colo., finished first in the 50-yard (25.47), 100-yard (54.82) and 200-yard freestyle (2:01.44) events in a dual meat victory over Sweet Briar College (141-108). The 2011 ODAC Swimmer of the Year also teamed with Elizabeth Buckley, Kelsey Bagley-Hall, and Elizabeth Plowman and swam the anchor leg to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.48.
