ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THRU WEEK PRIOR TO: APRIL 9, 2012

 

BASEBALL
Robert Garrett, Lynchburg, Senior, Pitcher
Garrett, a senior from Richmond, Va., turned in best performance of the season as he helped Lynchburg sweep previous league-leading Bridgewater in a double-header last week. Garrett fired the first seven innings of a 4-0 shutout of the Eagles as he gave up just four hits and fanned six. The victory gives him four wins on the season, and helped lower his earned run average to 2.85, which is seventh in the ODAC.

BASEBALL
Dan Savage, Lynchburg, Junior, Third Base
Savage, a junior from Ashburn, Va., had a huge week at the plate, highlighted by a 5-for-5 performance in the second game against Bridgewater College. In that game, Savage smacked a pair of three-run homeruns while adding two doubles and a single along with another RBI for a total of seven in the game. He also plated two other runs during the week and crossed the plate a total of four times. He hit .467 during the week and is hitting .425 this season. Savage leads the ODAC in doubles (17), is tied for first in RBI (39) and is third in the conference in hits (51).

MEN'S LACROSSE
Jeff Keating, Roanoke, Senior, Attack
Keating, a senior from Chatham, N.J., led the Maroons to a pair of ODAC wins with 13 total points between the two games. In a 26-3 triumph over Randolph, Keating tallied four goals and dished out a pair of assists. He also picked up two ground balls. In a 14-12 win over Washington and Lee, Keating scored three times and passed out four helpers for a game-high seven points. Keating is currently first in the ODAC in points (54), assists (25), man-up goals (13), and man-down goals (2), and is fifth in goals scored (29).

MEN'S TENNIS
Mederick Ceril, Randolph-Macon, Junior, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Ceril, a junior from France, remained undefeated in conference play, topping James Lee of Roanoke, 6-2, 6-1 Saturday afternoon. Ceril has won 11 consecutive matches dating back to his first match of the season when he fell at Division I George Mason. He now sits at 6-0 in #1 singles action in ODAC play. In No. 1 doubles action, Ceril partnered with Chandler Weston to cruise to an 8-2 win over Lee and Matt Osman. Ceril's wins helped propel the Yellow Jackets to a 6-3 victory over Roanoke College.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Tim Smith, Roanoke, Senior, Distance
Smith, a senior from Roanoke, Va., put his ODAC champion cross country skills to work for a big day at the Duke Invitational over the weekend. In the 10,000-meter run, Smith crossed the finish line first overall in a time of 30:55.43, besting runners from all NCAA divisions. Smith's time set a new school record, ranks 20th in NCAA Division III this season, and set a new ODAC season-best time.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Amanda Theall, Shenandoah, Junior, Throws
Theall, a junior from Blossville, N.Y., put together a solid showing at the Goucher Invitational in each of the weighted throws. In the shot put, she set a school record with a toss of 12.17 meters (39' 11.25") to place second overall and first among NCAA Division III competitors. It also established a new ODAC season-best mark for the event. In the discus, Theall was fourth overall and second among D-III athletes with a throw of 36.43 meters (119' 6"). Theall set her second school record of the day in the weight throw as her heave of 44.70 meters (133' 9") placed fifth overall and third among D-III competitors.

SOFTBALL
Molly Smith, Eastern Mennonite, Junior, Pitcher
Smith, a sophomore from Elkton, Va., threw a pair of complete-game shutouts in three appearances for the Royals during their 3-1 week. She opened the week with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work in game one against Randolph. She gave up one hit and fanned a batter during that outing. In game two, she went a full seven innings, working around five hits and an uncustomary six walks without giving up a run. She also struck out one in the 2-0 victory. Smith finished her week a five-inning run-shortened performance in which she game up just four hits and fanned three in a 9-0 win over Sweet Briar. Smith was also solid at the dish as she batted 7-for-13 (.538) with two doubles, two homers, nine RBI and five runs scored.

SOFTBALL
Melanie Lamb, Bridgewater, Junior, Third Base
Lamb, a junior from Ruckersville, Va., was solid at the plate last week, helping to lead the 15th-ranked Bridgewater Eagles softball team to a 3-1 week on the diamond. Lamb went 6-of-11 at the plate with three runs scored and eight RBI to lead the Eagles at the dish. Lamb exploded in Bridgewater's 6-2 victory at Lynchburg with a 2-for-3 effort with a double and four RBI. She was 3-for-6 in that series. She followed that with four more RBI, another double and three more hits in five at-bats in a sweep of Sweet Briar.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Darragh Evarts, Roanoke, Freshman, Midfielder
Evarts, a freshman from Golden's Bridge, N.Y., put together possibly the finest week of her rookie campaign with 13 points on 11 goals and two assists during Roanoke's 2-0 week. In a 20-6 win over Randolph, Evarts scored seven times on seven shots while also handing out an assist. She also racked up nine draw controls, six ground balls and caused three turnovers. In a 15-9 win over Sweet Briar, Evarts added four goals and one more helper while picking up one grounder and forcing a pair of turnovers. Evarts is third on Roanoke's squad with 48 points, and is sixth in the ODAC with 39 goals.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Karen Montoya, Hollins, Junior, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Montoya, a junior from Delicias, Mexico, picks up her second weekly award after leading Hollins to three victories last week. She was nearly perfect in top flight singles and doubles action. Against Mary Baldwin, Montoya won 6-0, 6-1 in singles play and teamed with sister Patricia Montoya for an 8-1 win in doubles competition. Against Sweet Briar, Karen won 6-0, 6-0 and 8-0 in singles and doubles action against the Vixens. She capped her week with 6-0, 6-1 and 8-4 wins against Southern Virginia. Montoya is now 12-0 in singles play this spring, all but two coming from the No. 1 singles position.
