ODAC Players of the Week - Week 20

FOREST, Va. --- Swimming and indoor track returned to action over the weekend, bringing the winter slate into full action. Those earning weekly honors include (pictured, l-r, t-b): Kara Stafford from Emory & Henry women's basketball, Josh Freund from Roanoke men's basketball, Tommy Thetford from Washington and Lee men's swimming, Olivia Anson from E&H women's swimming, Amber Celen from Bridgewater women's indoor track, Alex Galloway from BC men's indoor track, Sommer Fanney from Guilford women's indoor track, and Davonta Womack from BC men's indoor track.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Davonta Womack, Bridgewater, Jr.
Womack, a junior from Roanoke, Va., put together a strong open to 2018 at Coach I Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. Womack fnished second overall in the long jump with a leap of 6.90 meters (22' 3.75"), which ranks second in the ODAC and 30th in NCAA Division III. He also performed well on the track, winning the 60-meter dash in 6.97 seconds, which is the top time in the ODAC and seventh in the country.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Alex Galloway, Bridgewater, Jr.
Galloway, a junior from Ashburn, Va., put together a strong performance in two sprinting events at the Coach I Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. Galloway finished second overall in the 200-meter dash in 22.85 seconds, which is the top-ranked time in the ODAC this season. It also ranks 27th in NCAA Division III. He also competed in the 60-meter dash, finished sixth in the preliminaries in 7.20 seconds and sixth in the finals at 7.22 seconds. His prelim time is just outside the ODAC's top-10.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK - FIELD ATHLETE
Amber Celen, Bridgewater, Sr.
Celen, a senior from Townsend, Del., continued her All-American level of performance in her first action of 2018 at the Coach I Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. Celen won long jump at 5.81 meters (19' 0.75"), which tops all jumpers in NCAA Division III and is just 0.08 meters off her ODAC record mark from last season. She also blistered on the track, winning both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes with times of 7.84 and 26.01 seconds, respectively. Her 200m time is first in the ODAC and sixth nationally. In the prelims of the 60m event, Celen won the heat in 7.78 seconds, which ranks second in the conference and fourth in the country.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK - TRACK ATHLETE
Sommer Fanney, Guilford, Sr.
Fanney, a senior from Burlington, N.C., put together a strong performance in a pair of mid-distance events at the East Tennessee State University Invitational. Fanney posted the ODAC's best seasonal times in the 800-meter and mile runs at ETSU. Her time of 2:33.86 in the 800m is fourth fastest in school history. She was 30th overall and first among Division III competitors. Fanney was again the top D3 performer and 19th in the mile at 5:39.60. That is fifth-fastest in school. Fanney also ran a leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed 14th in 4:33.21.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Josh Freund, Roanoke, Jr., Forward
Freund, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., shot nearly 70-percent from the field in leading Roanoke to a 1-1 showing against a pair of ODAC foes. Freund set career highs with 33 points and 17 rebounds in a 75-73 tight loss at league-leading Emory & Henry. He was 15-of-23 (.652) from the field and made each of three free throw attempts. He added an assist and a steal in 36 minutes of work. Freund then registered his second career 30-point game with an 83-77 home victory over Virginia Wesleyan. He was 10-of-14 (.714) from the field and 10-of-10 from the stripe on the way to 30 points. He chipped in nine rebounds and a blocked shot in another 36 minutes of floor time. For the season, Freund is second in the ODAC in both scoring (17.9) and rebounding (9.3). He is #1 in field goals made (110) and second in field goal percentage (.625). He is tied for fourth in the ODAC with five double-doubles.

MEN'S SWIMMING
Tommy Thetford, Washington and Lee, Sr.
Thetford, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., picked up in 2018 right where he left off in 2017 in leading the Generals to a dual meet victory over NCAA Division I Virginia Military Academy. Thetford won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles in 21.04 and 47.03 seconds. His 50-free time is second only to his previous ODAC best mark, while his 100-free time would be top-three if his name wasn't already perched atop the list. Thetford also competed in the winning 200-yard medley and free relays, posting times of 1:35.96 and 1:25.50, respectively.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Olivia Anson, Emory & Henry, So.
Anson, a sophomore from Apex, N.C., was both busy and successful in helping Emory & Henry win a tri meet over Ferrum (137-36) and Milligan (102-91) and split a second tri-meet with King (105-68) and Mars Hill (88.5-110.5). Anson won all three of her events against Ferrum and Milligan. She stopped the watches first in the 50-meter freestyle in 28.83 seconds. She also touched the wall first in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyles in 1:02.67 and 2:18.93, respectively. Anson competed in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles against King and Mars Hill, placing third in the 100-free at 57.73 and fourth in the 50-free at 27.13. She also swam a leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:52.88. Her second leg time was 57.66.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Kara Stafford, Emory & Henry, So., Forward
Stafford, a sophomore from Bristol, Tenn., helped the Wasps to a pair of ODAC wins to move them into a five-team logjam for second place in the league table at 4-2 in ODAC play. Stafford shot better than 57-percent for the week, beginning with a 6-of-10 showing from the field that included 3-of-4 from deep on the way to 19 points in an 83-69 win over Guilford. She was 4-of-4 from the stripe and chipped in four rebounds, an assist, and a blocked shot. Stafford was 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line towards 17 points in an 84-74 victory over Bridgewater. She pulled down eight rebounds, including five via the offensive glass, and dished out three assists. For the season, Stafford is averaging 8.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She is second in the league in free throw percentage (.885; 46-of-52) and sixth in free throws made (46).
