BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Drew Elkins, Bridgewater College
Elkins, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, had a big week for the Eagles. In five games, he was 13-for-18 (.722 average) with six doubles and a home run. Against Catholic, Elkins was 4-for-4 with three doubles, four runs scored and one RBI. Against W&L, he was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Against Mary Washington, he was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, a run scored, two doubles and a grand slam homer. He finished his week 2-for-4 in a doubleheader against R-MC and he reached base in five of his seven plate appearances. For the week he had an on-base percentage of .727 and a slugging percentage of 1.222.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Jesse Freeman, Virginia Wesleyan College
Freeman, a senior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Virginia Wesleyan to a 7-0 victory over Roanoke College by recording a career-high 11 strikeouts.  He now leads the team with 58.  The shutout was also the first of the season for Freeman, who improved to 4-1 on the mound. He also lowered his ERA to 3.21. 

Baseball Honor Roll

Chris Harpine, Eastern Mennonite

Went 7-for-11 with four runs scored, a homer and three RBI.

Jesse Baker, Eastern Mennonite

Threw seven innings in a 3-1 loss to Lynchburg, scattering six hits while giving up three runs and fanning one.

Brad Buchman, Guilford

Batted .400 with two doubles, a homer and four RBI in a 2-1 week for the Quakers.

Ryan Hairston, Guilford

Went all seven innings to record the win in the second game against W&L; surrendered 12 hits but only three runs in the 4-3 win; marked his team-best 5th complete game of the season.

Todd Harrell, Hampden-Sydney

Went 11-for-17 with four runs scored, three doubles, a homer and four RBI in a 3-1 week for the Tigers.

John West, Hampden-Sydney

Worked seven innings, allowing one run and seven hits to earn the win over CNU; fanned six and walked a pair.

Ronnie LaBrie, Lynchburg

Batted .700 with five runs scored, three doubles, one triple, a homer and four RBI; was 5-for-5 in stolen bases; reached base in 14-of-17 plate appearances.

Joe Devlin, Lynchburg

Gave up one run on six hits over seven innings to win the first game of a double-header with EMU; struck out seven Royals.

Charlie Hartt, Randolph-Macon Was 5-for-13 with a double, homer and four RBI in a 3-0 week; also picked up a win in the first game of a two against BC, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings; struck out three Eagles.
C.J. Rhodes, Virginia Wesleyan Backstop went 5-for-14 with two doubles, a homer and seven RBI in a 3-1 week.

GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Burton Wood, Guilford College
Wood, a junior from Siler City, North Carolina, led Guilford and tied for ninth place at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate with a 54-hole 219 (70-71-78), which ranked 9th among 80 competitors, first among ODAC players.  The Quakers placed seventh among 16 teams at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate. Guilford finished 4th among Division III competitors and first among seven ODAC competitors.

Tim Grindle, Virginia Wesleyan

Carded a 33 on the front-nine on Day 1 at Camp Lejeune, setting a new record for VWC; the Marlins' 293 team score on Day 1 is the third-best in school history.

Nathaniel James, Wash. and Lee Helped lead the Generals to a tie for 11th place at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate over the weekend; carded a 69-74-77--220 (+6) to finish in a tie for 11th place individually, while the team shot 283-304-320-907.

MEN'S LACROSSE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Ned Rider, Washington and Lee University
Rider, a senior from Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, helped lead the Generals to a 1-1 week by totaling six goals and one assist over the two games.  He notched two goals and one assist in a 15-10 loss to Middlebury and became the 28th player in W&L history to record 100 career points.  He then notched four goals in a 9-6 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday and currently sits at 106 career points on 74 goals and 32 assists.  This season, Rider has 21 goals and four assists for 25 points.

Men's Lacrosse Honor Roll

Norby King, Lynchburg

Won 10-of-13 face-offs in a 26-4 win over Hood; also picked up eight ground balls.

Paul Johnsen, Randolph-Macon

Scored three goals in the Jackets' 10-9 overtime win over Guilford.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jillian Boyd, Virginia Wesleyan College
Boyd, a senior from Warrenton, Virginia, led VWC to a 3-0 week with wins over Christopher Newport (9-6), at Guilford (15-12) and at Greensboro (17-9).  She scored a total of 12 goals in the three games and 14 points, the latter improving her career total to 207.  She is only the fifth woman in VWC lacrosse history to surpass the 200-point plateau.  Boyd also led the team with 18 ground balls and 11 draw control victories. She leads the Marlins with 33 goals, 42 points, 47 ground balls and 48 draw controls.

Mary Hutchins, Guilford

In a 2-1 week for the Quakers, scored eight goals and notched an assist to go with 10 draw controls and 11 ground balls.

Deanna Welsch, Lynchburg

Scored eight times and assisted on four other goals in two games for the Hornets.

Katie Green, Randolph-Macon

Helped R-MC to a 1-2 week with eight goals including six in an 18-9 win over Lynchburg.

Megan Behrle, Sweet Briar

In a 2-1 week for the Vixens, scored eight goals and dished out five assists to go with 11 ground balls.

Christine Bender, Wash. and Lee Scored 11 goals in three wins for the Generals; notched a career-high five markers in a win over Middlebury.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dana Dettmar, Emory & Henry College
Dettmar, a junior from Ewing, New Jersey, had a hit safely in each of six games for the Wasps, and had multi-hit games in five of those contests.  She batted .524 for the week, picking up 11 hits in 21 at-bats.  Dettmar scored seven runs, knocked three doubles and cleared the fences once.  She also drove in three runs.

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Gretchen Wolfe, Roanoke College
Wolfe, a freshman from New Windsor, New York, won four games in 29.2 innings of work last week.  Early in the week, she helped the Maroons earn a split with Bridgewater by giving up only one run in a 9-1 win.  She picked up another victory in a 4-3 effort over Virginia Wesleyan, and recorded both wins in a double-header sweep of Randolph-Macon.  She gave up 27 hits in 29.2 innings of work while fanning 16 batters.  She ended with a 2.82 earned run average.  Wolfe is now 9-1 on the season with a 2.10 earned run average.

Mallory Sandridge, Bridgewater

Went 7-for-9 in four games for the Eagles, picking up three doubles, a homer and six RBI.

Jessica Sullivan, Eastern Mennonite

Batted 10-for-25 with five runs scored and nine RBI.

Jamie Fraysher, Eastern Mennonite

Picked up three wins against one loss in 22.1 innings of work; fanned 18 batters and boasted a 1.58 ERA.

Struck out 21 batters in 17.1 innings of work over three starts.

Notched three homeruns, tying the Guilford record for homers in a season and career along the way.

Went 2-1 with a 2.62 ERA in three appearances; struck out nine batters in 13 innings of work.

Went 3-for-7 in four games with a homer and six RBI; she was walked six times and hit by two pitches.

Megan Franklin, Sweet Briar Pitched six innings of shutout ball for her second career shutout in a win over Mary Baldwin.
Mandy Nixon, Virginia Wesleyan Knocked out six hits including a homer in 14 at-bats; drove in five runs and scored three others; also stole two bases.

MEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Nat Estes, Washington and Lee University
Estes, a senior from Charleston, South Carolina, helped lead the Generals to a 4-0 week by going 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.  He won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1 and fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, in a 7-2 win over Bridgewater on Wednesday.  He then won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and 8-5 at No. 2 doubles in a 9-0 win over Swarthmore on Saturday and he capped the week by winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and 8-0 at No. 2 doubles in a 5-4 win over 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Sunday.  For the season, Estes is 8-5 in singles and 11-4 in doubles.

Men's Tennis Honor Roll

Mike Muir, Guilford

Won twice at #5 singles and once at #3 doubles to help the Quakers to a 2-1 week; beat his VWC rival 8-0 in GC's 6-1 win.

Kyle Schneck, Randolph Picked up a win at #1 singles and #1 doubles in a match against Lynchburg.

WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Leah Weston, Washington and Lee University
Weston, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colorado, won at No. 4 singles to lift the top-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over No. 3 Williams on Thursday at the 2008 Fab Five Tournament in Lexington, Va.  She also won at No. 2 Doubles vs. Skidmore, No. 4 Singles & No. 2 Doubles vs. Claremont Mudd Scripps, Wellesley, and Gustavus Adolphus. 

Women's Tennis Honor Roll

Kristen Lenois, Randolph

Won both of her singles matches at the #5 and #6 positions; also victorious at #3 doubles against Emory & Henry.

Virginia Edahl, Sweet Briar Won all four times she took the court, including #1 singles vs. So. Virginia and Roanoke, and #1 doubles against both schools.
Meredith Willett, Virginia Wesleyan Won three singles matches at #5 or #6, and won 2-of-3 doubles tilts; owns an eight match winning streak, longest for the Marlins.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Nathan Turner, Bridgewater College
Turner, a junior from Elkton, Virginia, won two events and placed third in another at the Liberty Invitational. Turner won the shot at 53 feet, 7 inches, won the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 5 inches and placed third in the hammer with a distance of 169 feet, 4 inches. A pair of Division I throwers placed ahead of Turner in the hammer. His throws in both the shot and hammer were new Bridgewater College records and both marks met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. 

Men's TrackHonor Roll

Chris Word, Lynchburg

Won the 200-meter at Liberty in a time of 21.88.

Jess Tomczak, Virginia Wesleyan

Set the VWC record in the shot with a throw of 37' 4.5" to place 10th overall in the event at Liberty.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Alysen Kuck, Washington and Lee University
Kuck, a junior from Staten Island, New York, placed first overall in two events at the Liberty Asics Invite.  She won the Javelin with an ODAC leading throw of 115'1" and also won the High Jump clearing 5'0.25" 

Women's Track Honor Roll

Jill Wattai, Bridgewater

Set new BC records in the 100 dash (12.58) and the 200 dash (25.36) at Liberty; the latter marked the top D-III finisher.

Michelle Leaman, Eastern Mennonite

Set an EMU record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.10; also placed 15th in the 100 dash (13.54) and the 200 dash (28.13) marking the second-best EMU time this year in the 200.

Ashley Allen, Lynchburg

Placed third in the both the shot (35' 3.75") and the discus (109' 7") at Liberty.

Ashley Roane, Virginia Wesleyan

Reset her own VWC record in the 1,500 with a time of 5:11.11 for 7th in the event at Liberty; old record was 5:16.86.
